Since the E39 appears to have sealed headlight units, is there a way to add angel eye halos short of prying open the existing units or is just better to purchase new head light units with angel eye halos... Thanks!

If you have a pre facelift headlights, they can be easily opened to add angel eyes. There's just some clips around the lens that hold it together. With the facelifted ones, they already come with halos.

How you add angel eyes in pre facelift? I have one, I have angel eyes and I added them with duck tape. When you look from outside you can't see it and everything is perfect. The problem is I think that from heat that tape likes to stretch or even "untape" so now I have on one headlight a bit tilted AE. Trying to figure out how to fix it, that it would be long life solution. Don't want to just solder them on lamp plastic. I want to add them that they would stay there but if I will want to remove them, I could remove without leaving ugly headlight plastic.

Quality halos will have a plastic tab at the ends and I've seen DIYs online where people used double sided tape to mount them without issues. If it still doesn't work, you may have to permanently mount them w/ glue. It's really a choice you have to make, sometimes you can't have best of both worlds. The best way imo is to swap for facelifted headlights.

Yeah. But Chinese AE costs ~30$ and FL headlights over 200$. Plus I don't dig those FL turn signals :(

On my 2000 740i & my son's 2000 528i, we used Gorilla Glue on the back of the top ends of the "U" of the angel eyes to hold it, on the backside of the rings.
We also added a very small amount of GG the backside of the bottom of the "U". Did my 7 over 12 years ago & it's still holding fine. It doesn't need much of the glue, and I used a very tiny dab of water on the glue, per the instructions.

12 years and they still work? mine has 1 or 2 leds down after half a year. Are you using those CCFL?

Yes, I was talking about the Gorilla Glue holding nicely for over 12 years on my 7.
But, the LEDs on each ring are still working fine also, including the sets on my 7 & my son's 5.
On the 5, the Angel Eyes come on every time he starts his car, while on my 7 I have a fog light switch setting I use to turn them off if I don't want them on (like when I wash or work on the car).
