Just recently had a fuel pump scare, turned out, after a costly wrecker ride home, being a perfect storm of low fuel/steep grade/high heat/ that conspired to blow relay.

I have since decided to purchase a replacement fuel pump to keep on hand in vehicle to save more expense, as recently incurred, in event of inevitable fuel pump failure. I'm really not wanting to shell out for genuine OEM replacement to carry in trunk at this time, but am not certain which pump to purchase, and whether to go with complete assembly or pump insert only ???

I've read threads from links found in searching that suggest buying cheapest insert only pump online I can find and others stating they purchased an "XYZ Brand" and the wire terminals, and or nozzle, were different and pump had to be modified to be of any use. Seeing as I foresee this potentially being a roadside repair, unless I am given indication to change prior to failure, I want to purchase one that is a seamless change out.

Names I somewhat recognize I am seeing online are pump insert/pump-strainer from Hella/Pierburg and Delphi, as well as complete assembly from Bosch, and then a plethora of unrecognizable whatever-chinese (which scare the heck out of me).

What have you had success with ??? Thanks in advance :redspot

I would easily go with any of the brands you mentioned depending on price. Price being equal - Bosch, then Pierburg would prob be 1 & 2 choice... Delphi I even might go with if it was truly a "keep in trunk for emergency only".. I'm going to assume it was the cheapest.

Re: an even cheaper solution, you could obtain a junkard pump assembly including the insert and wiring, then pre-prep a generic fuel pump with the wiring and plumbing all sorted ready to go.

For an even yet cheaper solution in the 'just in case' category, just toss a whole used junkyard unit in the trunk...

I get your point but why then dont you take spare alternator and spare water pump in your trunk there is all list of parts that can fail any time...

New oem pump will drive you long time before you will need replacement it isn't part that fails so often.

Regarding pump choice i would take pierburg.

Buy AEM. It has good fuel pump. That is my advise. Am running on SC second year. Just small modification.

It appears that everyone sells the Pierburg as bare pump, I have never been into one of these, is the remainder of assembly typically reusable ?

Is the Pierburg plug and play with no modification required ?

Yep, no mods required.
