Hi everyone,

about to replace the oil on the M and I was able to track down one 5 quart jug of synpower oil and then looking on valvolines website it says their full synthetic is “formerly synpower.” Does anyone know for sure if they are indeed the same? I don’t want to mix them if not.

No problem mixing, certainly not in an s52 which has no special oil requirements. Though I like liquimoly 5w40 synthetic for all non-s54 bimmers.

This.

5w-40 tends to be what seems to work best for the M50 series.

My usual go to oil is Rotella-t 5w-40 full synthetic or liqui moly 5w40.

5w-30 weight tends to have higher oil temps and is a bit louder in the valvetrain and lifters. Just my experience over the years.

Yeah I switched from 5W-30 to 5W-40 years ago due to lifter tick. It seems to work better. I use the Pennzoil Platinum Euro stuff, though I may switch to Liqui moly or something due to price and the fact that both are BMW longlife-01 oils.
