Hello,

Looks like my 2008 328i is another victim of the "trifecta" error. In addition to the trifecta error codes, the car had a hard time starting. I replaced the Crank Sensor, which solved the long start time problem but now the car has a rough idle problem.

Below are the current error codes. Can someone explain the cause and solution for the " 2A96 Crankshaft sensor tooth fault"? Is it possible that my replacement Crank Sensor is bad? Any suggestion on next steps? Also, can someone translate the two EGS error codes?

DME
- 29D1 Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected
- 29CE Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
- 29CC Random/ Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
2A96 Crankshaft sensor tooth fault

DSC
5E1A CAN DME/DDE Signal Error

EGS
CF17
581A

Thanks!!!

I sure hope your replacement was a Genuine BMW OE or OEM sensor.
Too many electrical gremlins, electronic anomalies,
to bother with aftermarket sensors.

Only use OE or OEM for replacement of ALL critical BMW sensors.

Read a couple of posts with people having problems with non-OEM crank sensors and/or not "seating" them right. So, I just ordered an OEM sensor. Keeping my fingers crossed..

Hi I know this has been dead for a while but I’m having exactly the same issue as you, my car wouldn’t start throwing codes for my crankshaft sensor. I ordered one from Napa auto parts as the closest dealer is over an hour away. Installed new sensor car started and drove but threw same codes
2a96- crankshaft cog error
P1727- can engine speed
51a7-signal (engine speed) from ecu wrong
5E1A- CAN DME/DDE error
&
Cylinder 5,3,2 misfires
Was yours the non oem sensor?? Much appreciated for any input on this thank you!
