View Full Version : Will 235/45/17 work on staggered rears.

I have staggered double spoked m wheels and was wondering if I can run 225/45/17 fr and 235/45/17 rear. Will the 235 look stretched on the rears?

I have them on the 8.5" rear M Contours. They look normal, not stretched really at all.

I have 235/40/17's...Don't look bad at'all...However, I think I'm going back to the staggard look...Looks much nicer.

that's a factory fitment, you'll be fine.

235/40/17s are, not 235/45/17s. That'll raise the gearing up a little bit.

Jed: How does that effect the car? Obviously the spedometer is going to be off...I just want some clarification by what you mean by gearing. I went from 245/40 (or 45) to 235/40.

TIA

doh! I am terribly sorry for my mistake. :( I must have misread the measurement and posted in error.

Jed is absolutely right...again sorry my mistake.

it's gonna slow you down ever so slighty off the line/acceleration but give you a slightly higher top end.

this is in measurements that you may be able to feel from a light but probably not from a roll.

That makes sense...wider tire = greater traction during take off...But why would the slimmer tire give you greater top end?

Yeah I know...just a nOOb :)

Well actually a 45 profile is taller which raises your gearing and theoretically raises your top speed.

With a lower profile tire (say you went below the 235/40/17 to a 235/30 or 235/35-assuming there is such a thing), you are lowering your gearing-increasing torque multiplication allowing for greater off the line acceleration.

Like the idea of changing diff gearing. Putting a numerically higher gear ratio (such as a 3.23, 3.38, 3.46) lowers the top speed in each gear range, but in each gear, acceleration is greater due to higher torque multiplication.

Putting in a numerically lower gear ratio raises the speed range of each gear-meaning your top gear in theory, will have a higher top speed. I say in theory assuming the car has the power to get to that top speed. Some cars with an ultra high 6th gear can't get to it's numerical top speed because of lack of power-it's just an overdrive gear.

Gee Ron... you're making me feel bad now... :(

nah man, it's just that i hate seeing wrong info online and this time it's me doing the crime.

I have 255/45's on my rears :devillook

wow that's a tall tire, got pics?

I'm using 245/40/17's all around on my own ride.

Edit, I meant to say 255/40/17s :D

I also have 255/40/17's in the back, they even look mean with stock suspension and even better with an aggresive looking tread, like the new Eagle F1, Pilot's, and Yoko's. A nice set a tire change the whole look of the car. :)

How much of an effect would the taller tire have on the front? Say, going from 225/45 to 235/45? Slower turn-in? Heavier steering?
