Very nice low mileage car that has all the right options in my opinion. I'm curious though, was that a good buy? did the buyer pay over price? etc

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1997-bmw-m3-64/

Hard to put a number on a low mileage m3 sedan, granted it was converted from an auto to a 6 speed manual so it's not an oem M345, but does it matter??

Discuss this rare piece and the potential of other e36 m3 sedan market in general

Nice car, but the price is silly. It's the collector market. Nobody is going to drive that car, because it loses half its value if you put any amount of miles on it. Whoever bought it will sit on it for 5 years and sell it again for $10K more. That's how it goes.

Personally, I'd much prefer spend a third of that on a clean car with 100K more miles, which has perhaps had more maintenance items addressed (stuff ages regardless of miles on a 20+ year old car). The 6 speed swap is weird to me without putting in more power as well. Usually they're done along with an S54/LS swap or a big FI project. I guess the 6th gear lets you get better freeway gas mileage, but it does nothing for you in terms of performance on that car.

I agree, the seller only put 200 miles in almost a year, so it won't be a drivers car which is a shame because it's beautiful!

I think the seller did some decent maintenance on the car, but there could of been more done. the 6 speed doesn't seem too weird to me. if you're going from an auto to a standard then if it were me, I'd go for the 6 speed with future mods in mind. I wouldn't have gotten a brand new transmission off the shelf though!

agreed though, price was silly insane, but hopefully it doesn't push up the average to good condition m3 sedan because I'm wanting to get a good deal on one eventually

Realistically, this car had two of the biggest wrong options from the factory. Auto and dove.
The thing about auctions is it only takes 2 people with money to make a crazy financial decision. I don't think its indicative of the market in any sense that we weren't already aware of. The cars have been climbing steadily for like 5 years now. So has every 90s sports car. So has the economy. It all correlates with how much money people have to spend.
If the buyer is happy with his purchase he didn't overpay as far as I'm concerned. Hopefully it gets enjoyed. The 10k rule hit the 15k rule about 2 years ago, and I'm thinking the 15k rule is now approaching 20. It will come grinding to a halt next economic downturn and people will be scrambling to unload them, and other sports cars, then the cycle will happen all over again.

Does it originally being an auto affect it's price? I'm curious because you can't claim it's a true M3/4/5, but at the same time technically it is one now.

How does that affect the pricing and the market on the authentic M3/4/5s? it does it matter at all?

It affected this one quite positively.

notMpowered, you're not wrong. Auto and Dove aren't cool, although Dove is at least acceptable for other peoples' Estoril cars. I looked at an Avus coupe a few years back and I just couldn't get over the Dove interior.

The owner put insane money in it and got good money out of it. He ended upside-down because he decided to buy everything new and had spendy shops do the work, but at least you know it's righteous at that point. You can't buy a new E36 M3, but the buyer got something close and with a couple good upgrades off-the-bat.

If E36 M3s dip during the next economic downturn, I'm going to capitalize on that and buy a couple more. I've always wanted one in Hellrot, Techno, and AW.

I own a Boston Green/Modena currently (although I need to update my sig mileage) and owned an Arctic/Black coupe prior. I had a '94 325iS in Hellrot and a '90 325i 2/5 in AW.

Why don't 4 door hoods have the vents like a coupe? That seems a lot of respray for just 29k miles, no?

im happy with my $3,000 sedan....factory manual

I could think of 100 other cars I would rather have for $36k. Car speculators are silly. Props if he drives it though (he wont)
