I troll Facebook Marketplace. A lot of people put cars on there that aren't listed elsewhere, and most Craigslist posters mirror their listings.

Yep being poor in DFW sucks. I'm fapping to that Technoviolet track-prepped M3 on Dallas Craigslist right now... $14k.
Just be patient as you really don't know how good you have it here. This is a massive population center where BMWs have been selling well for decades, and every dang one still running around this area is rust-free. Some guys on this forum can run a search for keyword "BMW" on their local Craigslist and get 10 results... 5 late model SUVs and 5 rusted out automatic base model sedans.
Hey want to trade E36s?
Mine may have 99 problems but runs amazing and has manual trans.

I purchased my M3 from another bimmerforums member who had it listed for sale in the regional sub-section. Bought my first e30 325ix from a friend of a friend who told me he was looking to sell while we were wrenching away in the garage. Found my second e30 325IX on Craigslist and my first e36 318is as well.
I prefer buying from other enthusiast owners since there's a better chance the car was well maintained.

My neighbor had a non-running 325is sitting around and I left a note on his windshield to see if he wanted to sell it . He called me a couple months later , and I bought it from him.

That's going to be tough unless there's a lot wrong with the car or super high miles or salvage.
I picked up a 98 328i here (auto) for $1900 with lowish miles and decent shape, but it is branded title.

hate cars that are posted three or four times for the same car! talk about desperate sellers

Go on Cars.com. Check all miles, and explore the US for used BMW's!
Remember, the difference between a $2K and a $3K car, could be $4K in repairs to get it thru inspection.
Craigslist used to be great, but once it was discovered by the dealers, it really, really sucks.

I bought my '99 328is 5 speed with 140k for $1,500 off CL. It was an enthusiast owner, who had mildly prepped the interior for Autocross, and had messed up the fenders with a fender roller. It came with every service record since day 1, 2 owners prior. Even though he was a BMWCCA member, he didnt list it with them, or any FB marketplaces oddly enough.
Deals can be found, but it took me waking up randomly at 5am, seeing the listing had been posted a couple of hours earlier, and immediately emailing him to get to the front of the line, before everyone else woke up and saw such a deal.

Both my cars were private sales. One found on a domestic market place site. A sort of Craig's list....ish.
M3 was found on Mobile.de.

My dearly departed best friend that got me into BMWs back in the early 90s once told me that "The right car finds you" ..Seven BMWs later, I can honestly say that he was absolutely right. Every BMW that I've owned has been a joy to drive and while all of the repairs weren't always welcome they were always affordable and were always a lesson (sometimes many lessons) learned in automotive maintenance. Keep looking until the right car finds you. Good luck!
