I have a 2001 330i Sport Package with the OEM Continental ContiSport Contacts on it. It's time to replace these tires, and I'm trying to decide which ones I should get... pretty sure this is stock, but just for reference:
Front: 225/45 17
Rear: 245/40 17
I've found the ContiSports to be pretty loud, and fairly squirrely. I'd like a quieter tire, but I don't want to sacrifice too much performance. Better tread-life would be nice too.
I'm purely a street driver (don't take my car to the track) and live in an area where it rains in the winter, but doesn't snow (much--and when it does I have access to another vehicle).
After reading around here and checking out reviews, I'm looking at the following:
Bridgestone Potenza RE750's
Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's
I realize the RE750 is not quite in the same class as the other two, but it's treadlife rating was 340 and per the reviews the performance of this tire seems to be pretty good (keeping in mind that I don't take the car to the track), and it also appears to be fairly quiet.
The Eagle F1 is pretty tempting because it's in the better performance category, but the treadlife rating was 280.
And from reading the boards, the PS2's appear to be the best-performing of all, but I question how long the tread will last on them.
Would a non-track driver like me be pretty happy with the RE750's? The other factor of course is price and the RE750's are more than $100 less (on TireRack) than the higher performing tires.
It seems like the RE750's are the better bang for the buck, but if there is a noticeable improvement going from them to the other two and tire life wont' be drastically different I'd probably consider doing it. I've also read that the 750's are a little odd in appearance...
Thanks for any feedback!
