I finally got around to getting some touch up paint from my local dealership but I accidentally bought III instead of II. How big of a difference would be noticeable if I used III on II? This is just for touching up stone chips, nothing major of course. I can't find much information on the differences of II and III but found plenty about I and II.

I would think they would be different enough to give them a different name.
Guess that's only speculation tho

Without any concrete data, I see the II as being slightly more egg-shell in color than III.

Yeah I think I have Alpine White III on my M3 and the paint is really brighter..Although in a photo it's tough to see here
The can of touch up paint AWII I've got is amazingly grey/brown in tint

It's not going to matter for some rock chips. If you painted a whole fender the wrong shade, it would be noticeable.

It's mostly just for rock chips but I do have a slight gash or two on the paint (not by me but previous owner unfortunately). I called my dealer yesterday and theyr'e going to order some Alpine II from Germany and replace the one I bought free of charge. As far as dealerships go, the service at BMW has been second to none especially in the parts department.
I figured if I'm going to do something about the stone chips, I might as well do it right with the exact right color.
For future reference for anyone, Alpine White II is color code 218 and Alpine White III is color code 300.

I think you will be happy to have applied the correct color to your stone chips. I recall using a slightly off touch up in the past and the Champaign speckles always bothered me on the silver paint.
Dealers do seem pretty good! Mine has overnighted parts for saturday delivery when I was in a pinch and just charged their standard (inflated) parts price to do so!

Do not use the BMW touch up clear coat. It's thick and turns yellow in the sun. Your repair will look a lot better if you just fill the chip with paint and polish it off smooth. As far as I remember, the white has no clear coat anyway.

The Alpine White III came with clear coat and from what I've found online, so does II. I'll heed your warning and just use the base coat and put some wax over it to protect it. Come to think of it though, using wax on matte paint is bad, so would using wax on the base coat be bad too?

I'm pretty sure wax would ruin the matte finish and make it too shiny. No problem using it directly on basecoat paint that you actually want to be shiny.
