So last year picked up a 525 that sat for about 4 years, 119k miles.

SUPPOSEDLY the trans was redone, but apparently not. At a trans shop with metal in the trans. Looking at a replacement AT (car is for a kid)

First off if anyone has any suggestions for where to look, please share. What I have found has me confused.
Despite putting in make, year and model, I get the following result.

GM transmission / A4S 310R / GM# 96 018 024 RH
Images of the trans show a GM product.

Is this right or a glitch?

No, that's right; GM made auto transmissions for many straight-six BMW's, including yours. The last letter in the BMW code (R) indicates the manufacturer - Z for ZF, G for Getrag, R for General Motors. The bellhousing is specific to the M50 (and related engines) but the guts should be off-the-shelf GM stuff.

Except these were made by GM in France. Tons of info on this site and elsewhere on rebuilds and replacements. The internals will look familiar to most reputable transmission repair shops, but rebuilds can cost more than the value of the car.

I just went through this dilemma, here's my thread...

My e34 is a complete rebuild, so I spent the cash to get it done right and its my daughter's car she uses to go on occasional long trips, so I didn't want her getting stranded somewhere, your personal situation may be different.

Those GM transmissions are in E36 cars, available in a junkyard near you, for cheap. I got one for $200 and installed in one weekend in my driveway with the car on jacks.

What symptoms is yours showing? Could be, it's just a matter of cleaning the screens in the valve body and a new filter and ATF. Shogun has a good video on YouTube on cleaning an E32 transmission, and the same procedure is actually simpler in the GM transmission.
