I plan on keeping a spare fuel pump relay for my 95 525i in the car, I have been looking online and I see 4 and 5 prong relays. is there a difference and which should I buy.
Thanks

The best way to know for certain is to put the last seven of your VIN in the RealOEM site and find the correct part number. There are some variations depending on model and time if production. You’ll also get the latest part number as there may have been supersessions over the past 20 years.

what are the numbers of the fuel pump relay you now have installed, and how many prongs does it have?

:lol
@OP Of all the things to carry as a spare why this? If you are concerned yours is about to fail just change it now and worry about it again in another 20 years.

I understand I did the same thing when I was driving a e28.

Did you end up buying the Relay? I am also in the dilemma of figuring out the exact Relay required. Would be helpful to know what you end up buying! Thank you

PN 12 62 1 735 424
This is a pretty standard SPST relay, easily substituted.

Why such consternation over the damn FP relay of all things? If you have doubts about your existing one just change it out now, sheesh.

If you are adressing the poster above you (latest), I can understand them. Usually I have no idea if the right relay is even in my car due to PO changing most things out. They vary year to year or LHD vs RHD so even bently says "your's may vary", every 2nd one I've seen on the internet had a different relay outlay - so diagrams are unreliable information. The closest diagram to mine is still different in regards to the small black a/c and washer motor relays.

But yeah, things like fuel pump and horn are the simplest, usually 30a SPST 4 pin relays. Still trying to work out why the blower fan is some 5 spade (with diode or resistor across the coil on a separate spade for some reason), likewise some "unloader relays" - look like standard SPST 4 prong relays but seem to have a diode or resistor across coil to output

E: took me a while to work out what horn/phoner jumper relay was. It is a regular relay that cuts out one horn if you blast it while on the car phone. That's pretty bmw LOL to me but for ages I had no clue a regular spst relay will do, or if I was actually looking for a jumper until I worked out I shouldn't even care, whatever - no big deal if the wrong thing is in there and one horn never works because I don't have a car phone. I thought it was something that could stop the horn entirely so I was originally worried about what the PO put in there.

Thank you for understanding about what was mentioned earlier and providing useful information. As you also mentioned its difficult go by the part numbers! Which is why the question for the part number!

If you check out realoem or bmwfans it will let you know the part numbers for the engine relays. Then copy and paste the number in google and you can find the relay online.

I use this BMW part search tool to compare prices of a part over a range of suppliers: http://www.furiousmethod.com/
