I've noticed my passenger rear is a bit too low. It is definitely lower than the driver side and sometumes hear some light clunking going on from inside the cabin in that area. I dont see anything broken from the bottom can it be a shock mount or something else from the top? What else would cause it to sit lower than the driver side? Rear suspension is all new with TRW and lemforder pieces. The rear shocks are still original and car has over 200k on it...

Will a bad shock cause the car to sit too low or does the spring hold the height?

Here is a pic of the bottom portion from both sides I have stock 740i sport suspension.

How do you post direct images from the Flickr app?Is possible, because if the shock is dead, there is more tension to the spring and of course it is compressed more than normally.

Maybe try old method, by pushing car down(on every corner) and see how it reacts on each corner.

Ayal, the springs normally dictate ride height. Unless the shock/strut is worn out and binding at a lower than normal position. Another possibility is
the spring itself, sagging from use along with worn spring seats.

I bet you would be astounded at the difference with new shocks and springs. Give the girl a new stride!

I just noticed my '01 left rear is lower also, rusty spring seat on the shock. Time for surgery!

New rear Bilstein b4 shocks and oem sport springs in. Does this require an alignment after replacing the rear shocks?

The shock plate was bent on the passenger side and rusted out. The driver side was still straight but rusted as well. Surprisingly the M tecknic shocks were still good... Put in my black rear seat belts and removed the speaker box for a monsoon upgrade st some point...

It's best to align after any suspension modifications.

And to clarify, in your instance only rear wheel alignment.

Most if not all places only do a 4 wheel alignment but I believe it is not necessary to do an alignment after the rear shocks are replaced. The only bolt that came out was for the control arm on the wheel side. Correct me if im wrong?

I goto a specific NTB that my friend only uses. It seems its hard to find a place that actually knows how to do a proper 4 wheel alignment on german cars and this place does it great everytime. $99 for 6 mos warranty but i think my last alignment is out of warranty. I will check it out and if still valid why not let them do it...

Are the springs the same or upgraded from non-sport to sport?

My car is a true shorty sport and i just installed some low mileage cleaner sport springs on the rear...

Gotcha! Then I agree with the others about no need for alignment as the ride height won't change that significantly. I thought you upgraded to sport springs. Carry on!
