My high mileage E38 (2000 740iL 235K) has started a new problem. The effort needed to steer is very high. It is not as bad as a car without power steering. But, it is close. According to the lid, it requires the Pentosin CHF 11S. I checked and it was a little low. So, I must have a small leak. But, even once it was at the correct level, the steering is still pretty hard. So, what am a looking at?

It may be an issue with your servotronic. There are a number of threads about that. It could need new o-rings, need to be replaced all together $$$, it could be an bad general module, wiring, or it could be an accumulation of codes in the general module that disables the servotronic.

I just had this same problem and it was the codes. Cleared out the codes and my power steering is back to normal.

How do you clear the codes in the general module. Will my code reader do this?

Depends on what code reader it is, but in general, no for a generic OBDII or Peake.

I'm going to state the obvious. Check tire pressure. 5 IB. low can create a heavy feeling.

Check engine light (CEL) means 'Cost Estimate Large'
