So, in the thread " engine pics" there is a picture of this " the halo engine. M88/3 group c 420hp " particular engine.

I have asked several times, please an estimate of what it would cost me to have this engine built? Also who should I contract to build it? Then what gas do I run V P race fuel? Also will I have to do the clutch and a different rear end? Last do I need a drive shaft from like Portland Driveshaft?

Thanks.

It's not rocket science to get 420hp from an M88 using modern technology. If you just want to drive into a shop and drive out with 420hp, you'll have to use Korman or VAC etc, which means probably $30,000+.

If you need it to look like that exact engine, you'll need the slide throttles and Kugelfischer setup from an M1 procar. I don't know anything about them, but from what little I know about vintage racing, those parts are probably worth $50,000 in barn-found condition. And then you can start on the engine build.

Korman .....maybe. VAC no. What about Metric Mechanic also I heard the true master of this is Carlos Perez at Blue and White Auto Haus in Coral Gables Florida.

What about clutch and drive train ? Hey Layne its Scott you helped me with my A/C a few years ago. Will you be at Sharkfest ?

Metric mechanic they can do S38s, but couple times I asked about M88s they didn't seem to know what I was talking about.

I know the S38 and M88 are very similar but... Very pricey their s38 rebuilt starts at $12k.

For $12k you can get one hell of a S54, 5 S52s, couple LS1s, one ls7 etc.

Shit even Frank Fahey one of the guys who knows these engines well put a LS engine in his e24.

wow, you have huge price tags over there in the USA :o 12k for a rebuild, and it is only the start? well about 12k it cost me here in Latvia to do the following things for my e24:

complete s38b36 engine
bore from 3535cc to 3617cc and Wiseco pistons 94,50mm, comp. ratio 12:1
new gaskets, etc.
Bosch EV14 670cc injectors
Bosch 044 fuel pump
OEM connecting rods with new bushings
ignition coils from m54 engine, for each cylinder
VEMS engine ECU, adjusted for super plus gasoline (e98)
equal lenght stainless steel headers
full lenght Supersprint Race exhaust
K&N air filter in OEM air filter box
SPAL electric vent. (OEM fan coupling delete)
engine oil cooler
getrag 280/5 gearbox
maybe few more things, that I missed

dyno showed 350 hp engine power, 415 torque

few more upgrades for the car:
drive shaft from e46 328i, 5 cm shortened and rebalanced
shortshifter
front axle: bolt on e31 840i front brembo 4-piston calippers, brembo brake discs, EBC yellow stuff pads, bilstein b6 dampers with AP lowered springs, BBS RS wheels 8.5J with custom ET
rear axle: OEM calippers, bosch brake discs, EBC yellow stuff pads, bilstein b6 dampers with AP lowered springs, BBS RS wheels 9.5J with custom ET
Nardi black line steering wheel, M shifting knob
OEM cluster upgrade to 300 km/h and redline 8000 rpm + engine oil temperature meter replaced the econometer
VDO gauges with new oil pressure sensor and new coolant temperature sensor

12k for all these things and labour costs included

This halo engine was built by Pip Barker for the Jim Richards driven JPS Group C 635. It needs to be dimensional correct internally so no longer rods and no larger diameter pistons. He could probably build an S38B38 stroker to 500hp+. The M88/1 in the M1 cars used a longer 146mm conrod and as such got to 495hp. His Group A M30B34's are guaranteed 330hp plus.

Pip Barker was the JPS racing team's chief engine builder and still looks after the cars today. The JPS 635CSi that just went to the USA had it's engine rebuilt by Pip last year. For my E3 racer he is currently building an M30B35 for me with;

1. Original Group A block.
2. Original Group A crank.
3. B35 head fully ported, with combustion chambers re-shaped and larger valves.
4. Big 318 degree cam from original schnitzer 635 specs.
5. Original Group C pistons (yes they raced single cam Group C 635's).
6. M88/1 stroker conrods.
7. Estimating approx 370hp in my 1230kg racer. He has all parts bar the cam and all machining is complete. Hopefully it goes together in March.

My advice would be to buy the S38B38, go race ECU and a slotted cam gear for fine tuning, go 294/273 Catcams with high performance valves and springs, go the Getrag 420g 6 speed and a 3.73LSD. Expect a top speed around 275km/h (171mph), 0-62mph in sub 5 seconds and 400hp plus or minus. The Halo engine at 420hp would not be street-able. The 3.8 litre S38 spins to 7500rpm readline on a factory setting and I'm getting mine tuned to 7750rpm.

Here's a photo of Pip and my mate Elie (S14 specialist building my S38B38 hot street engine) discussing my race engine, while I drool over Pip's race engine!
