what can be the cause of hesitation

i have a 2006 325i. When taking off from a complete stop, it accelerates in 1st then seems to hesitate before shifting into 2nd. This is an automatic. It is a car i bought used a week ago. Somewhere i read something about the car learning the acceleration habits or something along those lines. Ideas?

Your car most likely has the GM transmission, so a tiny delay may be normal. Adaptations and programming can certainly play a role here. Many people find that resetting the adaptations improves performance. Smoothness and speed also improve with newer software revisions. Another thing worth considering is the transmission fluid, as fluid ages and changes viscosity, the adaptations don't always act right. I would probably clear the adaptations and go from there.
