I picked up a 91 535i over the weekend. On the 118 mile trip back the automatic transmission started to slip. Along with that the temperature started to creep up. The short story is I barely made it back and now I'm sitting in a quandary. I have to keep it an automatic, 3/91 build date BTW. I am going to get into it tomorrow a bit, but wondering where to start first. The transmission issue I think is related to the overheating to a certain extent. But won't be able to confirm until I'm under the hood. This is my first e34, so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

The only common cause I can think of for a slipping trans and overheating would be a failed trans cooler, which is integral with the radiator on that car. So, coolant into your trans and vise versa. Time to examine the fluid levels and condition. My gut says it's more likely to be independent, but concurrent issues, especially given that the car was recently sold off. Me also thinks the seller is glad you are 118 miles away. Good luck.

I have a 4hp22 you can have for $50, not far from you. I bought it on eBay for my 89 but I'm not gonna use it.

Steve, From what I have seen out there is that there is a cut off date on the 4hp22's. If anyone can confirm or deny that it would be great. If any 4hp22 works, I will definitely contact you Steve.

I generally don't believe in coincidences , so I agree with you.
