"1980 633csi
Hey guys, new here so howdy!
Yes, like a rude newbie I start of with a question, as all rude newbies do, always
Looking to get 1980 633csi as a project car, but probably 80% of it is already finished.
It has about $12k worth of parts like AC, clutch, and other small stuff as well as new engine (220hp). So a lot of work is already done, only thing that needs fixing to get it stably running on long distance is radiator. Other small things need fixing but not important are: interior (seats, dash have cracks which were fixed with DUCKTAPE, paint job is needed but not bad, moon roof needs fixing, and few small things in AC needs a kit (or remove AC belt and ad some power).
The things that remain old on the car is steering, suspension, brake system, and tranny, all of which seem to work fine. He wants 2k for it, and wants to sell it quick because he got a new car, moving out of the state because of few things, and he doesn’t have time to finish the car. Radiator so far is only thing that needs fixing so i can drive it with out any problems.
So first is, you think car is worth finishing off? and second, this is a bit of problematic, he hasn’t driven it much since new engine, in about 8 months he got 1000 miles on it since repairs. Do you peoples think that this will be problematic at all?
That’s about all, it started from 1st try, it ran fine, handled good brakes felt good, overall the car felt ok-good, only problems I have with that year is 4speed feels weird and well its 24 years old and front window doesn’t go all the way down, hehe.
Oh yeah, 224k mi on it originally and 1000mi on it with replaced parts.
I will also take it to shop and lift it up to take a look at it but want to know what others think and someone directed me here.
So if possible let me know what you guys think
Oh yeah, also is there any upgrades for 1980 633csi? Harder suspension, turbo, free flow exhaust, and other things, probably no chips right?
Also is there a way to make the AC controls from 1981+ 633/635csi work with 1980? Also the computer/controls from later model of 635csi working on older 1980's ones.
I guess I don’t mind but the front window to go down all the way:]
This is a bit second hand thing but would like to know either way.
Thanks
Cheers "
First is the early, 1976 - 1981, e24 body style was based on the e12 four door, all before 1982.

1982 and later is based on the e28 four door car.
The issue of rust, is the big deal.
Here is a link on the engine controls:

Cool, thanks for links!
is 1980 e24 really diffrent body from 1982+? they look prity much the same, i was trying to find diffrents in body but couldent:/ maybe wheelbase is diffrent:/
I still dont understand about the engine, it looks like 1980 3.2L is diffrent from 1981 plus. So that might create a small problem when and if i decide to mod it abit, because its not teribly fast car :) Maybe turbo or something... As some one said before not many mods for this car and well parts are harder to find then 3.5l engine :(
There is no rust at all so body wise its decent, its a california car. :)
And thanks for posting org. msg, i didnt want to double post but reliesed my mistake :)
Thanks again for links
Cheers

The body panels are essentially the same before and after 82. it's the chassis' that are completely different.
Pre-82 suspension parts won't fit post 82 cars, etc...
It even goes for the engines too - pre-82 cars were "L-tronic" or something like that. you can't ship them. 84 and later cars can be chipped, etc.
so the bodies look the same.. it's the electronics, engines, suspensions, basically everything else that is different.
E28 based sixes (later model) have more of a front wheel lip than e12 based cars.
