So, it's decision time. I have a 2006 325xi that is in great shape but my mechanic thinks its got a transfer case problem, chain may be slipping. At 200,000 miles, is it worth doing this repair? I think the cost of a new part is prohibitive, are used parts worth the risk? Is there a good source for rebuilt transfer cases?
What's likely to also fail on a car this age? Clutch still seems ok, but how do I judge how long it will last? I bought the car 5 yrs ago at 120k miles.
Thoughts and recommendations?

If it were my car, I would remove the transfer case and inspect it. It might be rebuildable. If not, there should be some wrecked cars that have been parted out, giving you a chance to pick up a used one.
btw I have a 2006 325xi Wagon. 130k miles. Mine looks like new. So no way would I throw away the car because of one failed part.
I used to live in Mendon, NY. So I know your town very well.
What is leading him to a transfer case....is it making a noise....is it manual or automatic?....200k on a automatic is vary good but i would be looking there first for a slip

Any follow up on this? Thinking of rebuilding mine due to noise.
