Here are a few pictures of my freshly blown 4-5k mile 275-30-19 Kuhmo Ecsta Supra 712. I was driving down the road and thought that I had a bad wheel bearing and POW tire blows out! No damage to the car and wheel is perfectly fine. I will have to see how Kuhmo stands behind their product...

32 psi
I had the same thing happen to me on an 18" 712 tire (which suck except in the rain btw) I called tirerack and complained until they sent me a new one.

I believe there was a recall on that tire.

I had a similar situation with an S-02 on my right rear with 35 lbs of pressure. It was below freezing which might have had something to do with it, but somehow I doubt it...
I believe there was a recall on that tire.
The recall was on Kumho's V710-their R Comp.
Holy crap! That's crazy! I used to ride on 712s now I use ES100s as my street tires. You weren't rubbing at all before this were you?

Jed the only rubbing I have is very slight on the outer lip, just enough to make noise without leaving any marks on the tires...

That's kind of scary. Glad nothing worse happened. Hope Kumho comes through-maybe you can get a set of MXs from them!!!!
I can hook you up on a set of michelin pilot sports in the same size for CHEAP, I'll help ya out since you had bad luck :(

Ali,
Thanks for the offer, I wonder if the Pilots will work b/c the section width listed on tire rack was almost an inch wider than what I have now! I would scrub even more for sure if the measurements are correct? If they are a bit narrower with rounded shoulders (compared to my Kuhmos) that would be perfect. The new Kuhmo should arrive on Wed (at my expense of course) Maybe I can meet up with you and compare the tires side by side? Do you have 1 or 2 pilots? Thanks again

If you look at the tire carefully, it looks like the tire was torn becase it caught something on the sidewall or it was scrapping. I would inspect your inner fender liner for any abnormal protrusions or this happens when you hit a pothole/debris at the right angle. The sidewall is only about 2mm thick and can tear easily when something sharp scrapes on it.

Ali,
Are the Pilots in GA? where I can compare the tires side by side?
Joyride,
I will look at the inner fender/liner to see if anything looks abnormal. I did drive on the tire for about 5 min b/c I was in the hood an had to drive to a safe place...

You are running 18s on the 7 right? I am not sure how that will compare to the 19in size tires?

Never had any problems with my 712's and I'm almost through my second set. In fact, I think they are a great value.
I've seen problems from just about every tire manufacturer, even the almighty Michelin. You just got a bad tire or hit something the right(or wrong) way.......it happens.

Yeah, 18s. I thought that you wanted to look at how squared the sidewalls were compared to the Kuhmos.
Are you shooting for a single replacement or are you just going to buy a whole new set of something else?

5000 miles on the kumho 711's and not a problem yet...they're not the best tire, but they're good enough for $85 a piece and free mount and balance :jump3:

I replaced my blow out with another Kuhmo, I still like the tires.. I found that there was a tiny screw in the tire causing a slow leak which I guess allowed the tire to build up enough heat to breakdown the sidewall.. I wish 19in tires were $85!

On an M3 ive had:
712 and Mx from Kumho
AVS sport and ES100
and now Im on S03s...
I think I know a bit about tires. Enough to know that Kumho is the worst tire EVAR.

the 711's are an H rated tire, why would you put an H rated tire on a bmw when they come with michelins from the factory with a much higher rate?

You make some odd posts....
MX's will run circles around everything there. S03's will keep up but also cost a lot more.
Funny how Kuhmo makes some of the most popular tires in both street tire and race tire classes in SCCA Auto-x events....

I believe the Kumho Ecsta Supra 711's are V rated if I'm not mistaken...just one below Z rated. At least that is what my mechanic told me when he was explaining the price difference, tread difference, etc. I would never put H rated tires on the BMW...you lose just about every aspect of handling and grip. Anyways, I'm not gonna get off on a rant about tires, because bottom line is that I've had no probs with Kumho SO FAR, but only the future will tell :D Thanks. Oh and I hope you can make it to the meet on Sunday, I wanna see that sick ass car of yours! It makes me drooooool every time I see your sig.. :D

Were you rubbing from the inside? The lip of your rim and portions of the inner tire wall would suggest that?

When the 712's first came out, they were about even with Nitto 450's. My first set of 712's went in about 15,000. My next 3 sets of 712's have held up very well. But they are definitely not track tires, they just don't have the stiffness or stickiness. And the last 20% of the tread is a little scary in the rain or in the dry, which makes me replace them faster than other tires, however I am yet to get a defect from them.

Gotone,
No rubbing at all from the sidewall or the inside of the rim (marks on the backside or rim due to prior tire mounting I imagine). I think the screw in the tire caused the tire to lose pressure, build heat, and eventually caused the tire to fail

Wierd post. You really didn't like the MX that you had? Why?

No way. The Nitto 450's are garbage. I would compare the 712's to the 555's. As much as Nitto markets the 555 as a "max performance" tire, they really are more of a "high performance" tire.... similar to the 712's.
The 712's definetly aren't track tires, but i've used them on the track before and they aren't as bad as people might think. After 4-5 laps, they definetly start to give away though from overheating (greasy feeling).

The first 712 set I had was on my Maxima when I was in college, 5 years ago. Nitto 450's were around the same price range so I tried both tires, I didn't like either. The 712's wore very poorly when pushed. I'd say they are a track tire for a honda civic or a underpowered front driver. LOL. I have been reading about cheap Korean tires on forums for years. I don't know why? Guess I am just cheap. Then, the newer version of the 712's came out. The tread was slightly different, but the sidewall is a bit stiffer and they wear slower. I was impressed with my second pair. I got 20K out of them. From then on, I have been satisfied with the 712's, but, I know that I am always gonna be a few seconds slower than the guy with Z rated track tires no matter what they are. I never intended on buying tires for the track though.
However, my next tire will be a set of MX's due to a need for more grip and the fact that all tires wear when they can't stick to the ground, so I think I may get just as much mileage out of some MX's. I guess I'll find out.

I just bought a 528i in Dallas and drove 1.1k miles to Detroit. The car has Kumho Ecsta Supra's on and they are about the worst tire I think I have ever driven on. Noisy, poor in wet weather (I thought I was going to die when a torrential downpour hit), not even sure feeling on dry pavement. The weird thing is that they still have decent tread left, although they feel like they are on their last leg.
I will personally never invest in a set.

Maybe they are V rated, I was just basing my guess on your sig which says you have M3 wheels which are 17's and the only W rated they had the 711 in was 225/40/18 according to tirerack: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.jsp?make=Kumho&model=ECSTA+711&partnum=34HR7E711
but maybe thats just all they carry and not all of kumho's line.
oh and thanks for the comment about my car :) I wish I could have made it to the meet but I volunteer on Sundays :)

FWIW:
I had Khumos on my car and didn't particularly like them. Falken GR Beta's (235/40/17) are my new rubbers and they're absolutely great.

Sorry to bring this thread back guy
But I just got home from meeting my friend to put on his spare tire
He has a 350z with Kuhmo MX and the rear passanger tire was completely ripped apart like in the pic orginally posted at the start of the thread
I was just wondering what is the deal with Kuhmo, it obviously has happened to a few people
What is the warranty like, he only drove on the tires for about 5000km

I am not 100% positive, but I think the screw in my tire caused enough air to slowly leak out generating heat and stress on the sidewall which eventually lead to the blow out. I didn't even ask about a warranty b/c I felt responsible for the damage even though I had 4-5k miles on the tire...

I have heard that the MX's are better than the 712's that I have, but the MX was not available in my size... What size wheel is your friend with the 350Z using? Even when my tire was flat you could hardly tell with the 19in rim. The car even drove fairly well with a flat tire for the short distance I had to in order to exit the highway. I would have your friend contact and authorized Kuhmo dealer (or where he purchased the tire) and see what their analysis may be.

That gash may not be entirely from the blow out. Part of it was probably from you driving w/ a flat allowing the rim to sit on the sidewall. You're lucky you don't need a new rim. Hope you have better luck w/ the new one...
