I searched but didn't really find much..

My lease is up on my Mazda here in a couple of months and I have narrowed my list of replacements down to only a couple of cars..one being a 2011/2012 328i xDrive touring (auto).
What do I need to ask about/look for on these cars?
What are the typical issues and things that fail on them that would be costly to repair?
This is the biggest worry I have by picking up a car that will be/is out of warranty but is still relatively new..

Any help is much appreciated!

John

Do you need Xdrive?

IMO Bmws aren't known for their AWD systems.

Ask for maintenance records and pay for a PPI

IMO here are some things...Water pump, Oil filter housing gasket, lifters, & Ripped CV boots could lead to CV failure.

I have a 30+ mile commute, each way to work and I have to be there. We get snow and such here every year so I would like it for the piece of mind.

Thanks for the information! Sounds like some of the same issues e36s have! Haha

I went with an xdrive model for snow reasons as well. Almost need it when snowing and surrounded by hills in every direction.

I hear ya, well the water pump is electric... unlike the water pump on the E36/E46 etc... they run about $300 FYI and the Tstat is all one piece cost around $70.

I appreciate the insight! The only thing I am not nuts about with these is the gas mileage..I wish they sold an E91 xDrive 328d here..

The 2005 E91 330xd I drive is one of the best cars I've driven but it is not without problems.
Mine has over 400,000 Km/250,000 Miles on it and some parts will need replaced from time to time.
Some of the problems, from personal experience, on the xDrive:
- Transfer case prop-shaft (drive-shaft). Get the U-joints checked. If one U-joint fails (had one seized) it can destroy the bearing in the front-end differential (mine dissintergrated) or in the transfer case. New front-end differential, plus oil pan and labour was just over $2K.
- Transfer case acctuator. The acctuator motor rotor shaft worm-screw wears out and stops working. Replacement is north of $250.
- Transfer case rubber mount absorber. They do fail with time and will need replaced. Requiers special tool kit.
- Wheel size. Watch out if you run staggered wheels. Make sure your tire diameters are the same all the way arround.
- Shok absorbers. A bit more difficult to find for the xDrive but you can still get after-market. I installed a set of Koni FSD and kept the original springs. I wish the car was a bit higher at the back but I can change that by adding some parts from the Rough-road package.
- Transfer case and differential fluids. Replace regularly.
- Suspension. Lowering the car too much will impact the life of the front prop-shafts.

Other than that just normal maintenance.

Enjoy the car.

Excellent! That seems pretty normal. Thank you for the heads up!
