About two months ago I purchased a '95 325is, sport package with 64K on the clock! The indy dealer changed the water pump (now metal impellers), all fluids, put cross-drilled rotors as the regulars were likely to warp, new Dunlops, guibo, two rear springs and a few other items.

I drive the car about 25 miles a day and have begun cleaning it top-to-bottom to bring it to as close to brandy-new condition as possible. I'm evaluating a JC chip, UUC ssk and a few other goodies. I got in this morning, turned the key and the AST light and ABS light in the guage panel are lit. I haven't taken the car out as I don't want to damage anything I'll regret later.

Malfunction or serious problem and what are my next diagnostic steps? Any/all help is really appreciated. TIA

MIne has been on for about 2 months, go about 30mph and slam on the breaks. If you skid then there is a problem (as in my case). Mine used to go on and off with no problems but now I skid all the time. I have to find time to take it in. :(

I just got new front/rear pads/rotors. This happened only once, but my traction control/ABS lights when on and I had no idea why. I turned off the car then turned it on again. Same thing. I drove for about 30 feet in 2nd gear and both lights turned off.

Very complex systems that are not servicable without the diagnostic tools. About the only thing we can do is check the wheel sensors. Each wheel has a pulse counter that reads the wheel speed. If these sensors are very dirty (magnetic so they can pick up magnetic dust), or during the brake rotor change out, they may have been dislodged. Check their alignment (may be able to push them closer to the sensor ring if moved), and clean them.

Other than that, the codes must be read to determine what's going on. You can drive it without worry. You may not have anti lock function, but it is unlikely that you'll do more extensive damage, depending on the fault code that has been recorded.
