So i purchased a 95 M3 engine with ews2, came with the dme, spare car key, and ews module thats behind the glove box. I have a 95 325i that is a 11/94 build date with ews1. I want to still use my car key so I wanted to know if I can just swap control modules and secure the spare key inside the steering column near the key cylinder. will the dme detect the spare key and start the car with my car key or do I need to have the sellers ignition ring also? I know that the ignition ring on ews 1 and 2 look different but not sure if they are interchangeable??? any help before I start the motor transfer..also if I do need the ews2 ignition ring is that specific to the key or can I buy a used one on ebay? there is also some little box that the key ring attaches to do I need this or will mine work with the new key ring if needed?
Thanks
Jimmy

You need the whole EWS system there, so you'll need the ring. I believe they're interchangeable. Burying the other key in the dashboard attached to the EWS antenna ring is totally fine, the system doesn't know or care where the antenna is physically located in the car.

I've replaced the EWS ring and wire only with a used one that worked without a hitch. Must be EWS 2 on my 98

Thanks so much for that info...I know that the EWS control module behind the glove box is matched to the ecu and key, I am assuming the antenna ring is just a generic transponder so will pick that up on ebay or junk yard, but is the other little black box under the steering column that the antenna ring plugs into is that specific to the key, control module and ecu or can I just get that from ebay as well?? So excited to fire this engine up!!! I know I could have just gone with a ews delete program but wanted to keep the security system and original ecu to the engine as I live in cali and am doing a legal engine swap certified by smog ref.

Your car is 11/94 build date. You don't have any of those ews parts in your car. You don't have the antennae ring or receiver transmitter module or ews module. More important is you don't have any of the wiring to install those parts.
You have 3 options.
You can spend hours and hours retrofitting the ews system into your car. That will require you to find all the harness connectors required then splice wires onto them then run all those through the car. You'll also have to add a wire to the DME so it can communicate with the ews system.
You can buy a ews delete chip and you're done.
You can find someone selling a DME from a 95 m3 with a production date of 12/94 or earlier
Just to be clear in case someone mentions it.....you can't do the standard ews delete on this. You don't have anything to delete
