I thought that the 1996-1999 M3's were better than the 1995's (in regards to power and engine) because it was 3.2 and 240 horsepower, and the 95's are 3.0 and have less horsepower, and the 1996-1999's are OBDII. Why is everone talking about OBDII-OBDI conversions then? What's good about the OBDI compared to OBDII? (And was I right about the engine in those years, 95's are the 3.0's and 96-99 are 3.2?).

OBDI is less restrictive to mods meaning the engine reacts better....and the 3.2 and 3.0 have the same HP but the 3.2 has a little bit more torque...oh and also the s52 (96-99 3.2 engine) intake manifold is a bit more restrictive then the s50 (95 3.0). :stickoutt

Both OBDI and OBDII are not easy to mod extensively. In order to really get the most out of customizations, you need to go with an aftermarket fuel injection system (like the TEC-3) that you can program, test, and reprogram again and again...

Wayne lets say we have a heavily modded car, and its taken to an in-house tuner. Now this tuner can either burn a custom chip on the car thats been on and off their dyno.. or he can install the stand alone. air/fuel ratio came out to be exactly the same on the chip and tec3.
Now wouldnt it make the same power either chip or standalone?
The point of this is to level the playing field. I do know that tec3 disables some electronic stuff and doesnt use the stock hfm (uses some other kind of metering device, forgot what it was called).
Maybe these are the things that free up more hp on the standalone?

Yes, burning a custom chip will have similar capabilities - however, you need to "burn" a chip for each iteration that you make. You also can't make mistakes. If a tuner has a specific configuration that they have developed and installed in many cars, then yes, this approach can work quite well. Anyone who has played with a programmable engine management system typically never goes back. It's like using a computer, versus using a Playstation - two very different animals. It's a load of fun to play with, monitor and record all of the features of the TEC-3...
The TEC-3 uses a MAP sensor instead of the airflow sensor. They basically do the same thing - doesn't really relate to freeing up more HP.
