Is there a trick to installing an aftermarket 1 din radio without losing the mid, or are they so integrated with whatever factory radio you have that it's not possible.

This new '97 528i has a pioneer head and still has the wood door, you just can't lower it. I was going to return it to original, but was curious about this.

Thanks

The MID is a display and control device for the radio, which is housed inside the CD or tape player.

A lot will depend on the electrical butchery that was perpetrated when installing the Pioneer unit, and if an aftermarket amp was fitted.

If you are satisfied with the performance of the existing system, you may wish to consider leaving well enough alone. Quite a few owners were not satisfied with the BMW audio quality, and that's typically why aftermarket stuff was fitted.

Luckily po must of had a pro do it. They used an adapter so didn't butcher the wires. They seem to be using the original amp because the original wiring is still there.

I'm just kind of bummed about the wood door. It won't close and the 1 din head leaves a space on the top. What do others do about cleaning it up. Pictures would be great.

Thanks

If you wish to return to stock components, you will need to shop them on ebay, et al.
