89 535i manual tranny

Gents,

I have done a little searching on this topic but I want to get some input to make sure I have my facts straight. My 535i is already a manual but while I'm at the yards I was going to grab a spare motor and tranny. I understand the getrag 260 5/6 or 265/5 will fit but it must come from specific models due to a difference in the bell housing? Which models will have the proper tranny so no modification is necessary? I assume it's safe to say as long as any one of these were fitted to an m30 it works, everything else will not.

Yes. Any trans mounted to an M30 will fit your car. If you are looking for a spare motor trans combo, though, I would not bother with anything other than the M30B35 in you car. Too many differences in the block in older models Which make for complicated installs and less power.

The only advantage of older setups is the single mass flywheels in select models. There are many threads here on which cars have them.
