Greetings! This is my first post here so I am sure that I am breaking some rule.
The problem that I am having seems specific to me so I thought I should ask before I break something.
I bought an E34 wagon with a blown head gasket and I'm in the process of removing the head right now. I am trying to set the engine to TDC but I am having trouble confirming that I am at TDC. When I line up the timing marks on the crank the timing cover, I cannot get the flywheel pin to lock in place. The camshafts also seem to be misaligned because I cannot get the blocks that lock the camshafts into place to fit. The picture that I have provided is meant to show the square blocks at the end of the cams. The intake cam is not parallel with the exhaust cam when the engine is at TDC.
Side note: While I was working, I took the nuts off of the Vanos assembly and forgot to secure it back before I started rotating the crank (should not have taken them off in the first place) The Vanos popped off and I am afraid that I may have ruined something. Did I damage something or is it OK?
Thanks for your time and I really do appreciate the help!
