'ecu swap' is too vague to net me anything helpful when i search.

i'm wondering if it's possible to swap the ecu from a late-1994 325i into my 1995 525it. the reason i want to know is because the ecu will come with a manual transmission, which i would really enjoy.

seems i would need not much beyond the pedal assembly if i have a good transmission and a matching, working ECU.

what say ye?

Whats the build date of the car?

You can use the auto DME no problem with a manual trans. Some notice a hanging RPM issue when shifting. Some arguably say theres also power to be had sub-3000rpm with a manual chipped DME. As a 95 car, your touring likely has EWSII, so a silver label 413 dme, which has a chip coded to your EWS system. If its build date was late 94, it may already have the red label DME, found in EWSI cars. As long as the e36 has this same red label 413 you can just plug it in and fire it up. If you are swapping from the silver label to the red label, just snip pin 66 on the DME connector, plug in the red label, and fire it up. The difference between the DME's is the chip, which can be swapped out auto to manual versions. The silver label chip is not compatable with the red label DME, and vis versa. In short, you can chip your current silver label DME (if you have one) to have a manual transmission chip which is also coded to your EWSII (again, if you have it).
