How long an engine last is subjective to how much one is willing to maintain, repairs, and throw money in to it...
Is chain guide is the end of the motor? if you call that's the end then it's anywhere between 200,000km to 400,000km max. 600,000km? You better be on your toes on replacing everything including chain guide when it breaks, even that the car will fall apart before it gets to 600,000km.
600,000km? It's possible but that's a far fetch. So I don't think your mechanic is far off at all saying around 400,000km.

I was think 4.4 will be longer than 400000 km it shoud be run 400,000 withohut never open engine inside.
So it means Petrol engine and diesel in has very different resoureses I saw e38 4.0 diesel with 700,000 km on clock runs well only turbo charger restored engine as is.

My 1998 E38's M62 was running flawless at 320,000 miles (which equals to 515,000 kilometers). Bought it at 100,000 miles and never had a single issue regarding the chain guides or anything regards to the motor. The transmission started to slip and cosmetic wise it wasn't in a pristine shape anymore so I bought a 2001 with 50,000 miles a few years back and parked my very first E38 next to my work and still have it as a parts car.
After being more active on here lately and seeing all the chain guide threads, I, out of curiosity decided to lift the valve covers to take a slight peak at the chain guides and they look to be in one piece. The motor was glowing like gold thanks to the German Castrol oil that I used for years.
I don't go easy on my cars but I maintain them religiously. Stick to a quality oil and do not leave the oil in there for too long. Believe me the car will pay you back with the way it performs and lasts.

My non vanos m62 has well over 700,000km on it.
With maintenance, I don't think it's actually possible to wear this engine out. I believe it may literally be able to run for decades and hundreds of thousands of km more... and I often drive it like I stole it.
However, things like guide failures and cooling system issues can put you in the poor house if you don't spin your own wrenches.
Most of these cars end up in the scrapyard because people can't be bothered to invest a bit of time and money refreshing the various systems as the cars age. A few thousand here, a few thousand there, and fix wharever breaks as it breaks and the car will last a lifetime. Some people don't want to invest thousands upon thousands on a car with the kbb value of a geo metro, so they end up leasing a 1 series or a malibu or somesuch and tell themselves they upgraded because they're sitting in a new car. Others just dont have the capital onhand to deal with the issues as they arise, but can swing a consistent monthly payment on something newer with a warranty. Again, the m62 often ends up at the scrapper as a result. Sad but true.
