View Full Version : Apparently not the usual automatic tranny problem!

Everyone, my 2002 530I AT (ZF) has reverse only, no forward gears.
Here's the scoop:

I don't hear any odd noises from the transmission in any gear selection.
No displayed messages.
The SES light is not lit.
No change after disconnecting the negative cable for over 8 hours.
I started the car after connecting the battery; no luck, problem still plagues me.
I backed the car into the garage and put it up on jack stands.
Drained the fluid. I don't know what the lifetime fluid is supposed to look like from a car with 163,000 miles.
It doesn't smell burnt- it just smells like old synthetic oil. It looks to have a very dark green color.
The magnets have a fuzz to them with very little - I mean VERY little dark film in spots in the pan, parts of the pan were clean.
While rolling around under the car, I noticed the cannon plug at the back of the tranny and decided to unplug it and check the pins for corrosion.
The pins seemed clean without any obvious signs of problems.
I aligned the connector and rotated the collar. The collar rotated almost 90 degrees PAST the point where I initially found the tab.

I'm thinking I have an electrical issue, not a mechanical one.
No messages, no SES illumination seem odd given the situation.

I have searched for hours and read posts that may even be vaguely close, but nothing of value.

So I now plead my situation before you all hoping for some suggestions for diagnostic procedures before I put the filter and pan back together in case I have to test some connections at the valve body.

Thank you for reading all this !

Please help. Has anyone heard of this issue? Should I just put the pan back on and fill it up and give it a try? I don't want to pull the pan again to check the solenoid pack if the problem persists. How can I check this first?
