Just wanted to let everyone out there know that there is NO difference in performance with a K&N filter with the euro snorkel. Sorry fellas, hate to burst everyone's bubble. My gf and I raced our M3s tonite on the 210 going home from Irvine and from 75mph to 100mph, I could not pull on her. Dead even. We did this about 5x and topped off at 120mph dead even. I was afraid this would happen. We've done this before when I only had the K&N and it was even too. Both cars are 3.2L M3s bone stock. I'm a little pissed, but heck it was worth a shot. I hope this settles it once and for all that K&N panel filter with stock box does nothing. Even the euro snorkle does shit. I guess the next step is to get an ECIS intake and do it again :)

btw, this is the way you guys should compare mods. forget dyno figures and power curves. bolt it on, take on the road, and comare. I guess 1-3hp gain is shit in the real world.

BUT WAIT! not to despair, I did notice I was getting 29mpg on the freeway going 80-90mph. Now that was impressive. So, if anything, the euro snorkel really really helped my fuel consumption. Before I did this mod, I was avg 25mpg with city and mostly freeway. After I got back tonite, it was 26.5mpg. Not bad. So its not a completely worthless mod afterall. Just don't expect it to make your car any faster.

Interesting. Time for an intake. :)

So then you did increase HP? MPG gain is efficiency gain which is a direct correlation of hp gain if there was no change in aerodynamics (which could be a tail wind) or gearing. When you guys were racing were your settings the same, air off, windows rolled up etc etc?
I am not sure that racing down the highway is the better way to tell if you are getting anything out of your mods as for ....1 it is illegal....2 there is driver error....3 it is not common to have a buddy (or gf) which has the exact same car that is the exact same speed. 3-4hp may not be much but 4 or 5 of those 3-4hp mods is a substantial gain in a 200hp car. Forgive me for the rant but although a dyno is much more expensive (unless you get busted) it is the ONLY way to accurately test your new mods gains and losses.

hahahha, I was waiting for someone to tell me its illegal to race down the freeway. Let me make no excuses and say I really don't give a crap. I race my M3 on the freeway when there is no one around (this was 2am on an empty freeway). Big f'ing deal. Everyone makes a run every once and a while. How can you not? You have an M3. Is anyone going to sit there and say they've never hit 100mph on the streets with their M3 and that they only do it at the track? lol...

lets just be honest here and drop the "I'm a outstanding citizen" stuff ok? the CHP isn't gonna give you brownie points for promoting traffic safety on this board :evil2

as for the comparison, I turned on my a/c, drop all the windows and the sunroof and took out 2 sparkplugs :devillook

if you really want to be technical, we have the same spark plugs (those ngk somethings) and fill up from the same gas station. I have velocity splitters and she doesnt.

an intake as an only mod vs. a stock car would usually result in the same performance

im sure you would see power from the euro intake if you had more mods.

remember an engine is effectively a large air pump. the easier it is to move air the more power your going to make.

yeah, you are probably right. I just wanted to see what I could get out of factory type mods (ie, not going with aftermarket intake, exhausts, etc). I'm sure not complaining about the mpg, that came as a big suprise. I just hate it when people say you get xhp gains, etc...the only mod that I've seen that gives you some real wow type gains is FI, like a SC.

I sure wasn't expecting a miracle, but I hoping to see maybe some pull vs. bone stock. does obdII have anything to do with this tho?

Never said I was a model citizen, probably make you look like an angel actually, but you stated that the dyno was no way to test your mods and racing your girlfriend was. LOL! gimme a break. Do you realize how stupid that sounds? Where is she at.....I wanna see how my new Euro HFM and JC intake and softare are doing!!! LOL

first of all, that mod is supposed to give you what? a 5 hp gain? do you expect to see that from 70-100? Driver error, who shifts faster or who had a problem shifting, etc are all variables. Theres no real way to tell, but from your gas mileage being better I would say you gained probably 2-3 hp.

What's important here is that your GF has an M3 also. I have been looking for another for mine....

Next time, shoot a video. Or better yet, have someone film both you guys. That'd be sweet.

I think you just volunteered yourself clumps ;)

Does the euro snorkel fit our US airbox? If so, I might just do it rather than get a CAI, since it gives you better gas mileage...that alone is worth it for me...

Yes the snorkel fits the US airbox.

If i were to go from the OE paper filter to the K&N it would be for gas mileage and it's reusability not for power on these cars anyway..

Sure! Let me know when. ;)
