I have a 2000 540i/6 SPORT. Been considering an ///M badge right next to my 540i trunk emblem. That badge is already everywhere on my car (steering wheel, shift knob and wheels). I just DON'T want anyone flaming me when I put a trunk badge.

Poseur. Don't be one. My car came with the M logo on the steering wheel and door sills but I would never put one on the trunk.

Did you see that thread where the E39 got torched in the parking lot? He probably put a fake ///M badge somewhere.
Plus, people that do that seem like they just want people to think that their car is faster than it is. If anything, just debadge if plain numbers and an i are not good enough.

My first impulse is: No!
Second: It's your car.
Third: How many M badges are on the fairly non-M M235 nowadays?
My car has a tiny M on the steering wheel, but I'm not having any other M badge impulses. (I have a plenty of green and blue logos on the damn thing as it is:)

The M badge on M parts are there because the item/component comes from the M parts bin. A 3 spoke M steering wheel, or forged alloy M wheels...all indicate that an item has been upgraded from the regular/standard item, to the M item...its an aesthetic upgrade/improvement or a slight performance improvement (lighter wheels)...but does not indicate or position the car as being an M specific model. Upgrades/modifications aforementioned...are allowable and not frowned upon as "posing".
The reason many object to placing an M badge on the trunk lid is...the M badge in that location eludes to the car having an M engine or being an M car...and if you don't have an S62 under the hood but an M badge on the trunk deck of an e39...why would you want to indicate as if you did? Thus the disdain, eye rolling, and audible sighs when BMW enthusiasts see other owners doing this. :) Besides...any BMW enthusiast seeing that you have a 540i/6...knows that you already have a "special" BMW that came with upgraded performance parts from the M parts bin.
But when all said and done...its your car...and how much does it matter what others think. :dunno

It is generally frowned upon in the BMW community on a non M-converted car. One of the first things I did with my 323iT was rip the //M badge the PO put on it.
But at the end of the day it is your car so you have to drive it & can do whatever you want with it. I've always gone with what makes me happy on my cars and screw whatever anybody else thinks.....
I don't see what the problem is here. I have an M5 badge on my M5.

Being around so many bimmers all day long and seeing so many on the road, I can easily spot a badge that doesn't belong. Don't be THAT guy with a badge that doesn't belong. People driving Hyundais and buicks wont spot them. A real BMW drive will. Dont be THAT guy with a badge that doesn't belong, in front of a fellow BMW driver. The cringe feeling isn't worth it.
PS: I know its your car and people will say do what you want with it but those people aren't driving around with a badge that doesn't belong........

This is my first BMW and it has M badges on various parts of the car.. the wheels, door sills, the steering wheel. But that's it. When I see M's in places that aren't factory I see a douche bag. If you want an actual M car go buy one, don't be fake.. don't pretend to be something you're not. Prior to this BMW I've had a few Merc AMG's. I'd see the same BS there.. same thing goes for them. But hey.. it's your car... but don't get upset when people look at you like you're a fool. Or purposely point out the non M parts that should be an M exclusive part... letting you know that you aren't correctly representing the car. An example for the AMG posers, look at the brake calipers. if it says Mercedes than it's not an AMG. But hey.. it's your car... do what you want.

There's nothing like untouched factory badges. Messing with the badges is equivalent to breaking the "tamper seal." The car has been violated, probably in more ways than one.

I'm in complete agreement with Q on this. The parts themselves aren't the issue, but rather the badge on the back saying that BMW M GmbH built your car to that spec, which we all know they didn't. That's very different than putting parts that M GmbH made on your car.
Personally, I have an e38 that I put a S62 and 6MT into and did all the "M-Sport" upgrades including the sport contour seats, black headliner with black leather M5 visors, 3.15 diff, 750il brakes, etc., but one thing I didn't do was put a M badge on the back. In fact, I debadged it, because I think it looks better that way. Now, would I debadge an actual M5? Probably not, but only because it actually deserves the M badge. I do have a M badge under the hood though on the intake plenum :)
- - - Updated - - -
Oh, and I did put a M license plate frame around my "S62 PWRD" license plate, but that's the only external M badge on the e38.

once i have a majority of my planned mods installed (big brakes, supercharger, manual swap, lsd, springs'n'shocks, roll bars, m5 steering box) i'll consider putting an M in front of my 540i, since at that point i'll probably be punching at or above stock m5's anyway.

in my case i wouldn't do an m5 badge, just an M in front of the 540i, sort of a throwback Msport, a lost option package

a troll thread isn't the same as starting a thread on a controversial topic.
trolling is the art of pretending to hold a really unpopular opinion with the express purpose of making others angry at you, the comedy comes from seeing how silly people get when they're angry

The reason I removed badges from all 3 of my BMW's is simple:
I enjoy how they drive, handle and the challenge of keeping them road worthy while not braking the bank.
I don't give flying **** what the person sitting at the traffic light next to me might think about the car.
More than likely, if I don't have cheesy ebay package installed (chrome wheels, cheap headlights and tailights combined with ricer wing) they won't give it a second look.

This is all what I was thinking. Nothing more. I absolutely have no intentions of pretending to have an M5 because I know I don't.
There was an article I read before that BMW actually added the ///M badge next to the model number (i.e. ///M 325i) to their sport models but did away with it. The article I read centered around an E30.
