just want to share my experience on upgrading xenon bulbs
i did upgrade my 2004 x5 (halos and xenon bulb) - i know many e38 owners got e53 too
halo bulb is weisslicht purchased from stealth auto.com
xenon bulb is d2s osram xenarc 66240 cbi purchased from the retrofit source - same bulb used in e38 , but i am planning to upgrade to bi xenon ... so i got d1s same brand sitting around on the shelf

I don't know how does inside of X5's headlight look, so can't help you with any advice about upgrading to bi-xenon,
..
when xenonlight output turns red-ish, that's sight that it's not working good anymore

So...you just replaced the old bulbs with the same ones but new? If that's the case, I should seriously consider replacing mine...

Yup, if your xenon bulbs are to old than they are have burnt capsule which lowers light output
