View Full Version : My 530i5
I figured now that I am not sick any more and had time to clean and really investigate the car I should introduce my self to this side of the 5-Series board. For the last few months I have been wanting a nicer car that is not a full on project and something that I would enjoy to drive but not worry too much about and would be comfortable with taking on these long road trips I take down to Alabama, I did that twice in a month between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Every time I take those trips I have to borrow a car since the 99 Corolla I have been using has been quite dependable, I don't feel comfortable taking it 700 miles. So I have been looking at E46s and my only real requirement was 4 door and had to be a manual. There were some cars popping up but nothing that appealed to me for condition vs price. I decided to see what kind of E39s were out there but I was going to be a bit more picky as to which one I get such as color, miles, condition, etc. This last Sunday I found 2 cars 3.5 hours away one from a dealer and one from a private seller. An E46 330i Sport and an E39 530i Sport, how often does that happen that those 2 cars end up in the same area. I ended up with the 530i and drove the 3.5 hours back just fine. I think it will do great for what I need. So anyways I polished and waxed it yesterday since it was nice out compared to the last few weeks and here are some photos.

That is my new daily driver, no interior shots because it is dirty but it's black. There are some issues I need to sort out like replacing the windshield fluid pump, the sunshade motors, and other small things here and there. The only mechanical issue is coming from 5th into neutral it will not snap back like it should so I assume I have a ZF transmission and the detent is bad. It does not interfere with drivability but I know it can get worse. But here she is, not much will be done but keep here reliable and I have an AUX retrofit waiting to go in today I hope.

Congrats! Look like a fully loaded 530i, even with rear shade. Those style65 reps look pretty good on it.

Looks good XCRN. Welcome to the E39 forum.
Nice that you found a 5 speed, not a lot of them around.
How many miles on the 530? The E39 is a nice road trip car.
Thanks, no kidding there are not many 5 speeds around, had to go 250 miles to find one. It is at 170K and I was a bit skeptical about that, but it came with a good chunk of receipts that go up to 2015 so it has been taken care of well so it seems.

Welcome. Looks good, and as much as I like your Calypso E34, this one drives!

Thats the best part, it drives! But the E34 is not too far behind, I just need time and better weather which really does not come along often enough. I will say it feels a bit wierd driving a car with stick again. My old Accord was the only car I have driven stick, the rest were trucks, jeeps, etc and behave so much differently than cars.

Thats all I ever wanted out of life.
So got me an AUX port now since the radio reception kind of sucks. I have the port coming from the open space in the cupholder and I drilled a bit too low. It works but when I have the gps plugged in the cig lighter too, it gets in the way and bends the cord more that I want so next weekend I will be making a trip to the junkyard to get the cup holder, windshield fluid pump, and some other miscellaneous stuff. I also have serious seat twost on the passenger side but the purchase came with a spare sport seat so I am very happy about that.

Hey welcome. It looks like you know what to do to install the aux. I have the same business radio, what do I need to do so I can just plug a jump drive to play recorded music. If you don't mind sharing. Thanks

Was not too hard at all. The only real creative thinking to it is where to mount it. I ignored the part about the CD changer and de-pinning and re-pinning portion and just plugged in the AUX cord without 6 CD player capabilities which I dont have anyways.

You can go OEM for $40 with everything or go to Ebay amd find just the cord for $10 which I did.

The 65 reps have to go :/
The 65 reps have to go :/
Meh, they got good tires and the only 18s that I want are Style 37s and I really can't justify spending $700 right now. Personally I do not mind them, except for the peeling chrome.
I love the rear sunshade! Not really affective against the sun but is great when a redneck with a lifted truck and HIDs in reflector headlights is tailing you on a 4 lane highway at night!

I love the rear sunshades too. I leave them up 24/7 and it does block out quite a bit of light. Rear passengers love it.
So I have had it for a few weeks so time to check in. Everything is going great, and the rear sunshade started working out of no where, so thats cool. Just an awful, dreadful, horrific, horrible winter commuter, but is fun when no one is around.
Only 3 things that need attention. I have the windshield fluid pump so just finding time to do it. Seat twist in the passenger seat, got a spare seat and no time. And one of the more concerning issues is that it smokes real badly. Fluid levels remain the same so it is just the CCV which would explain the engine lean code I have that I don't have the part or time of course.
So far so good, I love it so much!

Don't let it smoke for too long. I would replace the CCV valve and hoses as well as the OFHG ASAP. You don't want the piston rings clogging up with burned oil and losing compression, very common on M54 motors.

Wonderful, I get to do this in the snow. I guess I will order the part tonight.

Welcome, good job on going out of your way to get the car that you truly wanted, that is a very cool car as I'm sure you know... Other people might say differently but I like the replica style 65 wheels,... better than the stock 16 inch 530i wheels... you definitely want to avoid potholes and anything like that with those wheels as you would want to do with any wheels but specifically replica wheels like that where you can tell they are replicas from a distance, usually crack easier... my favorite as well for any e34 e38 e39 is 37 for sure
Things still going well. Had a scare with the oil level indicater and I over reacted. Between work and school I still have not been able to do the CCV so I will probably end up taking it to my cousin's shop to do it. And this happend last week Monday.

It is going to be fixed and not out of my pocket. Happend in the parking lot at work but will be made right anyways. She is going to the body shop this Monday. 3 weeks I have the car and some one hits it, I hate Mondays.
I also fixed the driver window regulater and screwed up that job. Up is down, down is up. Turns out when I swapped the motor when it came apart I reversed the side of the magnets so that will get fixed when I feel like it.
So far so nice. Can't wait until warmer weather so I can do a full detail though.

My driver doesn't have a rear sunshade, but the donor car does. Does anybody know whether the wiring harnesses are the same? I'd be real happy to have the sunshade on the rear window and could just leave it up all the time if need be, but so much nicer to have the power option.
P.S. OP, if you don't find a wiper motor or cupholder, PM me. I have both out of the donor.
I did the retrofit of rear shade. Love it. Two things need to be done: Run a two wire from rear parcel shelf to the back of panel below the HVAC panel. Then source (Ebay, CL) a panel that includes the shade button and your existing buttons, i.e., heated seats, DSC. Follow the details in this link or Google for similar
http://forum.bmw5.co.uk/topic/63956-diy-retrofit-rear-electric-blind/
Pigtails for the pin outs at the panel are very cheap at the dealer.
All better. Surprisingly quick turn around, dropped it off Sumday night picked it up today fresh paint on the door.

So I took my baby on 700 mile road trip to 'bama for Mothers Day. I was gonna surprise her but she guilt trip me into coming up for the weekend and that was my plan originaly so I just admitted that was my plan all along. Anyways performed flawlessly and was so much better than the other vehicles I ised coming up here. I have done this trip many times now but in a Toyota truck that was not tok comfy, a Jeep Wrangler with the soft top no AC no CC so that was miserable but got use to it after driving that way from Seattle to Ohio, and a RAV4 which was comfy just a pain to pass people and speed up to 90. The E39 was awesome, left at 5am and got here right arpund lunch time and did not feel uncomfortable until the last 30 miles. So today took my car to this awesome dream land where you pay $6 and have unlimited time at the car wash and vaccume stations and provided interior cleaning a microfiber towels. I was just so happy! And then I went and played on the hills around here. They are pretty much unused except for my mom's household and the utilities to work on the tower. Not even half a mile from my mom's drive way, it's awesome!

Thanks! I want to one day take out the doors and give the jams a good cleaning. Wasso much easier to do that stuff on my E34 since I did not depend on it.
Been awhile but I have done a few things the past month. I recently did just brake pads but also painted the calipers too. Ceramic brake pads but they are so boring compared to the old racing pads I bought the car with.

And the most recent project I am starting on is a VANOS rebuild. I got an old unit that was real greasy from the junkyard $30 and dissasssembled and stuck it in a tub of degreaser over night, sand blasted, and painted the exterior faces. I also polished the bores and cylinders with steel wool and metal polish. I have the Besian Systems o-rings to be installed. I am going to probabl rebuild the original unit to sell too.

So thats whats new.
Nice man. How much you think you can fetch for a rebuilt vanos?
Good question. Seems like professional rebuilts are $400 core charge included so I dont think asking $300ish would be too ridiculous but I am not sure. Also trying to figure out a price on a spare set of celis tail lights I got.

Are vanos unit a high demand item? I've never seen anyone needing one, they just usually do the seals themselves.
There could be someone out there who would do it. I am still debating rebuilding the second unit. Maybe make it a pretty art piece I guess.
While it is snowing, this will be my life for the next few months.

So I have decided to repair and refinish my wheels over the winter while the winter set is on there. I know they are only reps but I am not going to put a lot pf money into it. Ot will be more of a learning tool since this will be the first time that I will have all the tools and plenty of time to do it right. So more of a proof of concept type deal. I started yesterday and only got one wheel sanded down. So this will be a long project but I have all winter. So here is one of the wheels. Lots of peeling "chrome" and little bit of curb rash, but not hateful.

I then got my angle grinder out with a wire brush attatchment and went to town on it. Probably not the brightest idea since it left it pretty rough, but after using an ocilating sanding tool with 80-240 grit then 320 by hand fixed that.

Gave it a good cleaning with soap and water and is now ready for filler.

Did not all go to bare metal what ever can withstamd an angle grinder, I am sure it will be strong enough to stick on there.

I'm located in Toledo, Ohio and there aren't that many loved E39's. Good to see a fellow 5 series owner in Ohio. Here's my 02 E39 530iA. Paint is Sterlinggrey over black leather with the vavona wood trim. This thing has been in the family since 2013 and now it has about 160,700 on the ODO

Awesome 530i/5! It is great watching the car get into really spectacular shape. These cars demand attention but they are so rewarding to drive, as you well know!
Ajcanadian, I think I saw your car on the E39 USA FB group--very nice as well!

Your car looks great, black on black is very nice. I think the 530 is very under rated.
Here's mine. 01 Full M-sport 530/5 oxford over sandbeige (would love a black interior) Now sits on standard style 66, Style 37's for the summer.

Thats a purdy car. I did want grey just because how easy it is to wash it. But no kidding there are hardly any BMWs around here at all! I think for the 2.5 years I have lived in OH I have seen in the Dayton/Springfield area a total of 7 running E34s, a handful of E39s, and 1 E32. I see quite a few E46 and up though.

Has not been too expensive somehow. Been cheaper to maintain than my old Accord. Runs alot better too and CAN get similar gas mileage.

I agree, took me to look 300 miles from home to find one at all!

My car was for sale like 5 minutes away from my home. And when my father took a test drive in the car with me it felt great. And we bought it. That's true there's only 3 E34's close to me. And a handful of E39's close to me but a lot of E46s in my town. Do you plan on going to Timmayfest 2017?
