I am confused an could use your suggestions:

I have a set of 19x8.5 for my 2000 323i. Now tire rack recommends that I use 235/35/19, but I have a set of 215/35/19 lying around and I was wondering could I mount these and how woudl they look, or will I need spacers?

The reason we recommend the 235/35R19 is load capacity. The 215/35R19 is almost 900 lbs low on capacity. The tire size on the 215/35R19 is the correct height. The 235/35R19 will be less likely to bend when hitting a pot hole.

I've got 19x8.5 and I'm going with 235/35s. I think that is going to be a low enough sidewall without stretching a 215 out.
If anything, I would suggest a 235 as being the smallest you go with.
