Since summer has hit I have been going to a lot of happy hours. Just want to make sure I don't get a DUI, that would be a nightmare.

Has anyone bought one of these portable breathlyzers? I just want to get the cheapest one, the alcalert. Is says its acuracy is +/- 20%. That is the only reason I am iffy on getting it. The one that is more acurate is a lot more expensive. What do you guys think?

Any feedback would be apreciated.

that is the point of the breathalyzer to be responsible and not drive when over the limit.

what is your idea of responsible?

I can't leave my car everytime I go to happy hour. I just want to drink a drink or two and make sure I ok to drive. I think this is the most acurate way to figure out really how ok u are.

Those breathalizers are extremely inaccurate. I was drinking with a friend who had one, I blew a .65 (aka i was dead).

Think about this: alcohol dissapates at the rate of 1oz per hour. Average weight and average tolerance should say that you can have 4oz before youre wasted. So you dont really want to drive unless you have 2oz in you. So go to the bar. Have 3oz, immed, then have dinner for an hour, between the food and the hour you can now drive.

I don't think you can make generalizations about this stuff like they try to do all the time. every single chart i've seen on the matter is different. The one at work (a military "Safety Briefing" wall) says I can have 4 drinks in an hour and be at .07 I've seen others that say more than 2 in an hour and you're screwed. Unless you know what all the assumptions they made when they made the chart, there is no way to know how accurate its going to be for you, chances are it won't even be close. stupid things like the relative humidity and barometric pressure could possibly have some influence on your actual bac.

to the original poster, somebody once posted on these forums (maybe OT?) a link to one that was ~$100 that was supposedly pretty accurate. Might want to search.

that was the only thing I learned at biology class. while not entirely accurate, I think that people could make generalizations from it...

Yup

If you think you need to test your alcohol level you probably shouldn't be driving.

I don't agree with that...some people don't drink that often (like myself). Sometimes you can have a drink or two and feel fine but who knows if you are under the legal limit or not. I am not even sure if I was at the legal limit if I would feel intoxicated at all. State highway adminstrations has advocated the use of personal breathalyzers. My point is not to try to beat the law but abide by it and be safe.
