When my 1997 318i automatic first starts out in the mornings, it tends to shift at a much higher rpm than when warm. Actually just a mile or so and it starts shifting around 2400 rpms with moderate throttle cold or warm. I know, get a manual transmission! I would if I could but just getting it running to eventually sell, but I want it running right. The trans fluid is correct but I have not had the pan off nor changed the fluid. It has about 116k miles over 18 years, not with me of course.

Is this as it should be or should I change filter and fluid if it's not how it should be. Or, is it something else?

Thanks

Russ

shifting is normal. change auto filter and fluid if it hasn't been done in the past 40k.

I'm sure its supposed to do that to help the car reach normal operating temperatures, helps with reducing emissions also. It will hold higher RPM's longer and take its time shifting.
Or at least that's what it says in the owners manual for my other car.
