On startup I see the symbol with the ! that stays on briefly. I have no button anywhere that would turn it off. Auto trans. I don't see a second throttle body..

Snap a pic of the symbol. My 94 has no ASC and no ! symbols.

It's the same symbol that my 97 528 shows constantly along with the abs light. You should see the right rear tire on that car

Sorry. To the left of check control

doesn't that mean transmission error? The light with an exclamation point inside a cog, located just to the left of the Check Control light.

Chuckdizzle, I think you're correct. I checked my 528, manual shift, and it's NOT the same symbol, doh.
Maybe I don't have traction control at all. I'll check using the vin.

If your car had ASC, the light would be the one above the CHECK CONTROL light. The light to the left of Check Control is a transmission fault indicator. This light goes out briefly after engine start and remains out to indicate no issues. Light goes out after engine on. If the light remains on, or comes on during a trip 4th gear will be selected if the vehicle is moving. If the vehicle is stopped, 3rd gear will be selected.

I understand that you are saying that the light is on until engine start, then goes off. This is normal.

If the car has ASC+T, there is a switch located on the switch panel to the right of the cigarette lighter, next to the Roof Control switch. If there is no switch, the car does not have ASC+T. The system is defaulted to always be on. There are conditions where one would find the system to be undesirable, the switch is provided to turn it off. When the ignition is cycled off then on again, the system will be enabled and one must use the switch to disable it. The light will flash during periods when the system has detected the conditions under which it needs to be activated. The light is on steady when the system is disabled with the button, or fails a self test and is determined to be inoperative. The system continuously tests itself, if it fails then the light will be turned on.
