Let me apologize in advance if this has been covered before but I searched and couldn't find anything. A couple of weeks ago I picked up a project car. It's a 1992 325i with a production date of 9/91 (according to http://www.bmwvin.com) I don't know anything about the history of the car but it's obviously had a few owners. I was thinking about putting an after market chip in it and I pulled the ECU out only to discover it wasn't what i expected. The sticker on it is "0 986 262 335" and "1 744 859" After doing a little research on OEM parts I found what I think is the part with number "12141744859" and it's listed as a "basic" ECU as opposed to a "programmed" ECU. It looks like I can't change the chip on the one I have, correct? When shopping for chips Turner Motor Sports they list the following ECU's for a 1992 325i as "0 261 200 402" or "0 261 200 403"
Can I change the ECU so I can use a programed chip?
When I did a google search for mine "0 986 262 335" pretty much the only things that came up were eBay listings for chips from 91-92 525i
I don't think the engine has been swapped in my car but I'm not 100% certain.
Any insight you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
