View Full Version : m62 in e24
I have been using the all powerfull google. And have only found a few examples with even less pictures of the engine bay. A buddy of mine and I have come across a 99 e39 with the m62 and six speed in it near by for a steal. We are considering picking it up so that we may swap the engine in my six and the dash into his . . . . Jus tlooking for some pics for fitment and wether we will need to do a remote booster for the brakes or if we can still use the hydro boost and just finagle a pump system for it with the serp belt. Its either this or jump into the deep end with cinderblocks on our ankles and try to shoehorn it into my 77 e21 . . . and thats just silly.

Check the mileage on the engine. Around 130k those M62s need the timing chain guides replaced. They can grenade the engine. Look for info on the E38 forum.
BTW that six speed V8 combo in the 540 is supposed to be a beast. I really liked the performance and fuel economy in my departed 740il.

I have a 93 740i that is great as an auto. I have driven the 540 with the 6 speed and they are sexy. Just curious about fitment, and how people have worked it in there.
Thanks fernando, a few of those pics answer a few questions, easy place to relocate the ABS system. Still doesnt quite answer my powersteering pump question.... but that should be easy on the fly.

You'll have no problem powering the Hydroboost with the pump that's already on the M62.
Is it a vanos engine or not? Converting the car to OBDII would be the hardest part by far. If you can convert the engine to OBDI you'll have an easier time (must be non-vanos). Other than that it should be a really easy swap. People do put them in E21s, so the E24 has plenty of room.

99 would be the first year of vanos. I have experiace with both the m62/m62tu both great motors power wise. You would be better off with a pre 99 motor as the 99+ have electric throttle bodies to deal with dsc/asc. A non vanos motor have throttle cables and could probably be easier to fit. As mentioned the chain U guide fails on BOTH motors and causes the chain to fail. Also the vanos units fail on the Tu and need to be rebuilt. After dealing with both and have a Vanos motor myself I'd stay away from the m62tu the power difference is unnoticeable.
wondered about the pump. I need to get the vin from the owner/contact with him.
So, I am hunting for another source of an m62 and 6-speed, as my current lead seems to be dead in the water . . . . guess I will just keep riding the bike for fun.

I would sorce an m60 instead. It would be a nice combo in an e24. They are a very wide engine though so you will have some work ahead of you
m60 vs m62, would rather go with an early m62 as I don't feel like dealing with the nickasil BS. Plus they are easier to source.

You just don't buy a nikasil one, that's easy. In fact I have an Alusil M60 I'd sell you.
The popular option with E34 owners is to combine a M62 block with M60 heads and timing parts and EFI system. They call it an "M60B44". There's plenty of build threads here. The extra .4 liter really does seem to make a difference in torque, but other than that the M60 is better in every way.
