I have a 95 m3 with the euro hfm, 3.5" AA intake, stock injectors, and a matching Eurosport chip. Tonight I tried to swap back all the stock parts, but I ran into a BIG problem. The stock chip no longer works. I flipped the chip both ways and still the car won't start. I put the Eurosport chip back in w/ stock intake and hfm and the car started. What do I do to pass the smog check in CA?! My only option seems to run the aftermarket chip w/ stock intake and hfm. Do you guys think that my car will pass CA smog like that? I know my car would be running pretty rich as well without the bigger hfm and intake. When my car has all the mods on, you can smell the rich fumes of the gas, which probably means that my car is running rich even with the bigger intake and hfm so without those two things it'd be running SUPER RICH. Is it safe to drive around with stock intake and hfm with the aftermarket chip? I need to do the smog check tomorrow. Any help would be greatly appreciated! TIA!

I can't answer your questions directly, but I can tell you that I have a 95 M3 with the Dinan chip, and Euro hfm and air box, and I had a interesting time passing smog.

I took it to three different places before I passed, what was interesting was I changed nothing, but got quite different readings frim all three.

There is the possibility to pretest, nit sure what it really means, but I was able to do that, might just be money for the shop, but somehow it made me feel better.

It was my HC that was too high at idle, the first two times, after talking to some BMW experts in town, I was told to take it to a particular shop where they know BMWs and I passed easy. a magic touch I guess.

One final note I did not have to do the dyno test because I was buying the car from Santa Cruz County and they don't require it.

I did have to pass at idle and 2500 rpm.

So the moral is if you don't pass, don;t give up try another shop...

I just went to get a smog check today, and it turns out that I failed HORRIBLY. I was a "Gross Polluter" on the smog sheet and need to fix my car badly. I have no clue what to do. My car is running REALLY REALLY rich because of my chip and my stock chip no longer works on my car. SOMEONE HELP ME! Any advice or help would be great! TIA!

for anyone to help you will need to post the numbers, they tell a lot about what is going on.

You have a few choices. It's no surprise that you failed with a mismatched chip/hfm combo.

You can either leave the conforti chip in, put your euro hfm back in and try to borrow a euro airbox from a forum member to smog, or try to find another stock chip from a forum member to borrow for smog.

Whatever you do, you MUST match the proper chip to hfm in order to pass.

You just reset your adaptive learning, so you'll run way rich for the first 2-3 weeks. My EuroHFM/24#inj combo always ran super rich, then leaned out over time. I think you'll have a better time passing if you run the car for a while. I don't think it ever ran not-rich, just not-so-rich.

Also, clean your air filter, check your sparkplugs, and change your oil. Post up your numbers, especially the HC and CO count and limits.

I just did smog and passed . I made sure my cats were nice and hot. I am sure you can get a stock chip from someone on the board.

I was told by VJlax that borrowing or buying a stock chip from another memeber won't solve my problem as the car still won't start because of the EWS! I just tried my stock chip again and it still doesnt start. This is strange, I don't know why the stock chip doesnt work. Can someone post a picture of a stock chip for me so I can make sure that I'm putting in the DME and not the tranny chip? I also tried to disconnect my battery for 15+ mins and still no start with the stock chip. I am almost at a point of disabling my EWS. Can someone give me directions on how to do that? Any other advice would be great too! Thanks! :help

How would I reset my adaptive learning?

As for the numbers, here is the smog sheet:

You can clip the EWS wire on the Harness. Then re connect it after smog.

Alright, so how would I go about disabling my EWS? Does someone have the directions? Thanks!

Coming off pin#66 on the wire harness is a green or black/violet wire. Clip it up the harness a couple inches.

Before I do this, could the immense amount of smog coming from my car be coming from a bad O2 sensor? or even bad spark plugs? Thanks!

The cut is not perm but if this is the chip that came with the car the the EWS should remember it. The ECU has the larger longer connector. The Tranny one is shorter.
You should pass smog with the mods...maybe not visual. You could have a bad cat.

My mechanic was looking at my car yesturday right after I got the smog check and he saw different welds on my cats which he confirmed to be from installing a new cat. So my cats were changed before I got my car. I highly doubt my cats are going bad because I bought the car about 2 years ago and only put on 15k miles. Would bad O2 sensors or bad spark plugs cause this much smog?! I am getting really frustrated with my car right now. :help

replaced cats on a 'just-sold' car are classic previous owner trying to hide smog fails. Post your license plate and I'll run the DMV smog history (i can't see it in your jpeg).

Your car has probably run rich for awhile. A friends' beater E30 had 8 gross polluter fails over 5 or 6 owners in just a few years. That car (i surmised) kept getting it's cat convertors replaced just to smog & transfer ownership. Then it got sold.

You won't have any clue what the problem is until you MATCH the proper chip with the proper HFM!!! Once you do that, the car might pass smog perfectly...

I am listening to you, I just swapped back to the 3.5" hfm and AA intake. Even now, the exhaust smells really rich still. Do you think it could be my O2 sensor or even my spark plugs? TIA.

Give it some time to adapt, I bet the "rich" smell will go away.

Just had a thought over the long weekend. Perhaps the reason why your stock chip is not working when you are swapping it back is because you are not removing the decoder board with your aftermarket chip and inserting your stock chip on top of your decoder board. This is another why I think your stock chip does not work.

When you took out and swapped your chip, did you take out the decoder board with your aftermarket chip? Or did you just swap eeproms?

I just swapped the Eproms, how do you take out that decoder board that you are referring to? Thanks!
