View Full Version : Intermittent starting issue after hopping a curb. (NOT THE STARTER..Igniton coil?)

My 540/6 will only click once when trying to start, it can be kick started and driven with no issues or SES light. It may or may not start a few times after doing this, but it's never a sure thing. I just got done replacing my starter with a tested starter from a 740...no dice, still just clicks once like it wants to start, but won't no matter how many times I turn the key. Now I'm wondering if it's the ignition coil? My airbag light is on, dash pixels are spotty, but there's no power drain(battery is at 11.9 after sitting for a week) or dimming of lights when trying to start. The cause is most likely from when I hopped a curb head on about a week ago after starting the car to warm up a bit, totally forgetting that it was in first...:eyecrazy Could I have damaged any grounds underneath? My front pass ground is fine but haven't checked any of the others. I really just want feedback on any and all possible causes, any input is appreciated.

Might not be very likely, but I remember someone last year who had a no start issue after hitting a curb. Turns out the explosive charge on the battery cable went off due to the impact, disconnecting the battery as it is intended to do.

That sounds awful, but my car will still run perfectly fine after a kick start. Also, all of my electronics/lights work. I have yet to get fully underneath for a better view, but I definitely should.

Battery is dead. Charge it for 24 hours at a 10A rate. A fully charged battery measures 12.6V.

There is no "ignition coil." There are eight ignition coils.

What's a "kick start?" That's for motorcycles.

It's unlikely that the battery explosive disconnect discharged w/o air bag deployment. However, measure the voltage between the battery post and the power distribution panel. It s/b zero. Otherwise, the disconnect fired.

The reason the car can be started w/o the starter ("kick start?") is that there is an auxiliary feed from the battery that powers the car when the disconnect deploys.

You can reconnect the link, but you will no longer have the safety device.

Kick/push start is when you pop the clutch after getting the car rolling. I've only ever heard it called that. Also, not the ignition coil, but I've read the ignition switch (what i'm referring to) can cause intermittent no start issues. I'll check the battery, but it's not even a year old. If the battery did discharge then how would it start normally without the kick start several times after doing so?

A kick start is using the kick lever on a motorcycle.

I believe most car guys call that a push start. A kick start like edjack said is using your leg to start a motorcycle (hence, a "kick" start).
A bad iggy switch will not give you that "click". The cluster will light up like normal, but you won't hear a mechanical click.

Even is your battery is charged, be sure the battery connections are snug & tight. I've read where one of the battery terminal was not tight & it would click, but not enough juice to make it start.

You're referring to just a singular click right? It's very faint, if that makes any difference, not even sure if its the solenoid to be honest. My cluster does light up normally, but i've heard that it causes abnormalities like the airbag light/spotty radio strip.

The click is very faint, doesn't even sound like the solenoid. I've read that the switch will give me issues like the airbag light and a spotty head unit, which i also have

Also, wouldn't a weak connection/weak battery cause my lights to dim when trying to start? Really leaning towards ignition switch here.

the click noise is usually when the battery is almost dead. If the battery is good and its still doing it, perhaps you knocked a ground wire loose because a bad connection won't let the electric through and feel just like a weak battery.
