From what I understand, e30 M3's and ix's had 15 in. wheels, and the other 3 series models had 14s. I think that's what bav auto said. 15s are temporarily unavailable to me, so I'm going to use 14s off an 87 325e until my OEM 15s get here. Is this downsize OK? What I mean is, are they still compatible with my car even though they're an inch smaller? Thanks!

As long as the offset & the bolt pattern works. Also depends greatly on the size of the tire.
The second thing is your brakes. You must be able to clear the calipers.

bolt pattern is the same, I don't know about the offset, though.

Ok, thanks guys. It's being done by a professional body/paint specialist with a lot of experience in BMWs, so I'm sure he'll do everything right. I just wanted to make sure a downsize is ok. You don't here about people downsizing the size of their wheels, do you?! :D

Usually only for drag racing or autocross. :D

Well, your first hurdle is going to be trying to get 4-lug E30 wheels onto 5-lug E30 M3 hubs...then you have to consider the offset difference, and caliper clearance.

ix wheels are 4-lug, at least mine are. They have the same bolt pattern as the 14s.
