Hello to all the tire gurus!

Ventured into Alabama and got a punctured tire, 245/40 zr17...

What do you suggest, patching or getting a new tire, ContiSportContact? :help

Thanks!

patching will solve the immediate problem if a 245/40/17 isn't readily available, however, a patched tire will lose it's speed rating.

In a perfect world where money grows on trees, you should buy a new tire... but seeing as how it's not, if the tire is not badly damaged as a result of the flat... a patch should do you just fine.

If it's anything to do with the sidewall, then you should replace it. But a regular nail-type puncture in tires with decent tread, can be safely patched from the inside without worry.

If the tire is repaired to RMA standards it will be fine. The tire only loses 1 speed rating for every repair (2 repairs maximum in a tire).

Thanks to fellow Floridians and a Bostonian for replies!

User, your answer about speed rating reminded me of a Diablo computer game--magic items and damages :)

What's RMA standards?

I'll be going to a local shop tomorrow morning, 'cause Walmart couldn't fix it; they didn't have a machine to take the 40 off the wheel

Kevlar, I want to get two new tires at the same time for the rear--only a patch for OEM tire :alright

Did you know that Discount Tire repairs flats for free? They remove the tire from the rim and patch from the inside too, no plugs. They also will rotate your tire for free. You didn't even have to have bought your tires from them.

The closest DT shop is hundreds of miles away :(

I went to the shop this morning--they did a patch and it didn't work--hole was too big?!

What should I do? Buy an OEM tire (the other one is a little over 10K miles) or go ahead and get two new rear ones (what kind)?

Any suggestions?

Thanks
