View Full Version : Winter Beater Cruise Control Actuator Constant Clicking.

So, I've actually encountered this problem before with my 1983 633csi. But I never fixed it as I wound up selling the car before it annoyed me enough.

But this time i'm not going to let that happen.

So, the car when turned to on the actuator starts clicking like mad awful noise but as long as I push on the brake / clutch pedal the noise stops obviously the switch's are working for the cruise control

The stalk seems to have no affect on the actuator. Any position I move the stalk in it just keeps clicking away annoying my ears.

I've been looking on the web to find out what can cause the specific clicking noise but i've come up mostly empty handed half started threads without a result.

I've read that the ribbon inside can snap but whether or not that is producing the clicking noise i'm talking about is beyond me.

Also I know this is e24 forum but, they are literally the same systems and it's a 535 with the M30 only difference I see is that the actuator is easier to get to then on the 6 lol.

Thanks,

My e24 has the same issue. I am stumped. I have swapped out the actuator. I have swapped out two stalks. I have swapped out the cruise computer. With the stalk changed the first time, it stopped. but eventually it came back. The second stalk, the cruise actually worked two times, but then stopped working, and eventually the ticking came back. I have since just unplugged the computer and that has stopped everything. I would love to have my cruise back. And you are right, info on these systems are spotty. And the stalk is nla new, so I have had to revert to used... Im interested to hear any other suggestions. The brake switch seems to operate properly.

Both of my switches for the clutch and the brake do operate properly as they are creating an open circuit to shut the cruise control off. Brake lights are working fine so i'm not really sure how to approach this situation hoping some one has successfully been able to fix this problem.

Seeing as you've replaced the actuator, computer, and the stalk x2 makes me quite worried lol..

I'd be tempted to remove the CC cable to check it. I'd suspect the strap on the internal spool mechanism has pulled out of the cable buckle. Could also be a stripped gear or something like that. I've never take one apart, figuring they had a preloaded spring or something like that to balance the throttle body spring. I tend not to fiddle with electro-mechanicals unless I have ballpark specs to put it back together.

The cable "strap" is easy to get at - first unclip the throttle cable from the TB. Next, pull the cable out of the bracket on the shock tower (if installed). I usually remove the actuator next. Look on the side of the actuator - there is a locking 'button' tang that you can push in with an appropriate drift or screwdriver. The cable sleeve can then slide out of the actuator. The cable has a plug on the end that slips into a steel clip. That clip has a rubber strap threaded through the other end that can work itself loose. The threading is a little complex and fiddly since there is very little space in there. It also goes back together only one way - the cable is retained in the clip by a slide inside the actuator plastic housing.

The switch is easy to test but I've never seen a bad one. It's just one input and three outputs usually. I'd bet the CC 'computer' can also have a bad transistor or two, in that case a little re-soldering would be in order. I've never bothered, just replaced it. All Motronic 1.0 & 1.3 BMWs use the same analog CC system AFAIK. I have seen one E30 cruise switch that had more wires, but I've never figured out why that might be. Automatic transmission interface, perhaps?

I'll be waiting for you guys to figure this out, patiently, of course. I have the same problem, if that was not obvious.

I have nothing to add, since I just disconnected the clutch switch so the CC is disabled, and have not had a chance to look at anything else.
