I have an opportunity to get an 85 M635, last 7 of the VIN is 1050915. There is no rust, interior is in good shape, outside of the typical dash cracks. The front suspension has a few issue, control arms and sway bar links. The seller is very motivated, but I am trying to determine a figure to throw at him that doesn’t insult him and break my bank. Thoughts?

Mileage, service history, originality, paint and interior quality - a lot of factors to consider. Really nice cars are in the 20's, a concours car might easily be more than 2x that, and a higher mileage driver that needs some service could be 10k.

Get him to throw a number. He who speaks first, loses

Ran the VIN, and it's got the same color combination as my car, and the same birthdate, too.

Not exactly. The range is more like $4k to $40k, with most being well under 20, and neglected garage finds usually under 10.

Photos, how many miles, rust? We need far more info. Blind, if you are going to throw a number at him and he is very motivated, without any of us seeing any part of the car, $7.5k.
And the vin says S38, so 254hp and not the 288hp of the M88.

Most site will not differentiate the m88 or m90 and will list them respectively as s38 and m30. Was the s38 even available in 85?

I do not believe the S38 was available in 1985.
Being a 1985 and designated as an M635 if appropriately referenced it would imply its an import grey market Euro with the M88 engine. If it were an 87, 88, and 89 (2 units for Canada if I recall) then it would normally be the NA spec M6 and have the S38 engine.

Wasn't the M88/3 retroactively renamed S38B34 by BMW? I heard that somewhere... Either way the M88 is a subset of the S38, so realoem and others will only say S38.

Miles, engine, and Paint are what you need to look at. If its a Euro M635csi it will have the M88 motor with the oil cap on the intake side of the valve cover. The M88 is a single chain engine and they are known to have issues with timing components after 150k miles. So I would ask what has been done to the engine. If the car has over 150k miles it may need some engine work done. Timing chain update can cost at a minimum $1500 in parts. Check the bumpers those are hard to find parts for and the chrome around the tail lights those are expensive too.
I have an 85 euro M635csi too, Still working on her Restoration.

I wouldn't even crank an M88 engine at 150k on the original chain and tensioners, not worth the risk
