I took my 85 euro for a road trip this week with great expectations. In the past year I have replaced the brake system with e34 brakes, new accelerator cable, replaced cruise control stalk, new fuel regulator, new TPS and adjusted to spec, replaced AFM with one with 136,000 miles on it, new fuel injectors, plugs, wires ,rotor and cap, coil.
The good - Perfect idle, 29 mpg on highway between 60 and 85 mph

the bad - cruise control fail. The actuator ( replaced last year) began knocking, which was systematic of the fault prior to replacing cc stalk. the stalk is apparently nla, so I have used 2 different used ones...
The gremlin I have been dealing with for 10 years narrowed down to this. between 1700 and 2100 rpms, while cruising the car will downhift momentarily and then return to cruising gear. I had a long time to think about this, escpecially with my new knowledge of the recent work I have done. This problem I thought was solved, and an initial test drive confirmed. Once I started on my trip, it reared its ugly head. Since I have replaced nearly all components that I suspect, I am not going after the wiring harness, looking for shorts. My thought is the TPS line has a short in it, that when traveling at speed, it vibrates at that RPM and sends a signal to shift to ecu. Last year I had the transmission taken apart twice at the shop looking for the fault. They found no fault with transmission. Interesting find, the transmission works like it should below 1700 rpms and above 2100 rpms... So I drive either 65 and below and 80 and above...

Sorry for so long, but can the brain trust weight in if they have any other idea, or if I am on the right track...

Tell me about the CC problem. The actuator (correct term) on mine suddenly started the knocking thing also, and I just disconnected the clutch switch to disable it, all the pieces still in place. The knocking is from a problem with the stalk/lever? The CC worked fine before it didn't.

Sorry, that has nothing to do with your question.

on the cc issue. I have replaced the actuator, swapped out a different cc computer, replaced the stalk 2 times. this last stalk it worked correctly like 2 or 3 times and the nock came back.... I have to disconnect the computer to stop it, or step on the brake. So I believe the brake switch is good.... I really dont know.. All I want to be able to do is drive my car 75 mph with the cruise control on..... and cant!

I had briefly considered that it was a problem with the clutch switch, that it was worn and basically stuck in an in-between/alternating "yes" and "no" signal to the controller, causing it to turn the actuator off and on over and over. At least that seemed logical for the few seconds I thought about it before disconnecting the switch and forgetting about it. Yes, I would like to have it sometimes, so I may eventually get a new switch to see if that fixes it. I would guess that the clutch and brake switches are basically the same thing, and signal the controller to turn of the the cruise if either pedal is depressed (or just stepped on, no matter what mood it is in).
