Given the same appearance (Bumpers, rims, lights, etc.), which body style would you prefer?
For the sake of this poll; you don't own either of these cars, this isn't about anything mechanical, and the cars are totally brand new and can never show signs of wear.
Which one appeals to your eyeballs more?
what no coupe ? or hatchback ?

Sedan, always sedan. Nothing can beat the elegant presence of a good "three-body" sedan.
Touring are way more practical, but not as beautiful.

I wish. Those would both have been nice ideas.

After having several sedans and a touring, I'd rather have sedans. I like tourings but they aren't for me. /flamesuiton

I like the tall frames. Stoute, yet firm chassis. Petite need not apply.

Going purely on looks, they're both equally good. The sedan has a 3-box classic elegance; the wagon (call it what it is and be proud) has a stretched-coupe thing going on with its window. They're both very nicely proportioned and have an attractive, squared-off rear.
E34 sedans are more aerodynamic, have a touch less road noise, less weight, and no hatch problems. E34 Tourings fit about 50% more stuff, not counting the fold-down ability of the seats*, the back seats are slightly less comfortable for some, but are easier to fit with headrests, and have the seatbelts in the right place.
*Fold-down seats were an option for sedans, apparently. I saw one in Canada, and it had the seatbelts on the outside where they belong.

I think they belong where they normally are on E34s. They're easier to use and safer that way.

I've had both a sedan and a touring which were styled identical, I prefer the touring body.
It's just so darn useful.

If I could have merged the two, it would have been perfection.

Sedan. It's already at the limit of rear end boxiness but e34 touring just goes way beyond the chunkiness limit and is unbalanced to my eye.
Plus they only came in 525 version here in Oz and I much prefer M60

I don't think the E34 is boxy at all. It has a very aerodynamic design for an old sedan.
The E30 is very boxy for example.

Eww. What I meant was 5-door hatchback. You know, halfway between a wagon and a sedan.

Yeah, the "compact" doesn't sit well with me, but the coupe does.
And yes, there's a very clear winner. I'm happy with the results.
