Ive been working on ironing out all of the kinks in the drivetrain swap I did. When starting the car, whether cold or hot, it has a very high pitched, loud whine. Only when engaging the starter. Its still has a slight whine when driving as well, higher pitched at idle and lower gears. Quieter in higher gears.

I replaced the starter and took all the drivebelts off when to starting to rule out the ps, alt, ac, wp, ect... All vacuum lines are good.

At this point I think I have an issue with my zf310. Anyone have a similar experience?

bump readdressing this issue. car has been sitting.

had a master mechanic listen to it, he also suspected the starter. said that it may not be shimmed right. well there is only the heat shield or whatever between the engine and trans. the starter bolts have washers on them but they are external and would not affect the length of of the starter gear that sits on the flywheel.

what am i missing? anyone?

Maybe the PCV plate?

Fan clutch? Usually changes with temp though.

High pitched whine can come from the transmission if the fluid level is too low when the ATF is low, then the ATF pump sucks with the ATF also air, quite common problem.

Since we're seeing "PCV plate" and "Automatic transmission fluid" when OP says he has a zf310 on a swapped car...

S5x swap? M5x? Clearly a manual transmission on a six cylinder, want to ... oh I don't know OP... tell us what you're working on?

:rolleyes

That was my mistake, no automatic trans

OP's mistake for not clearly explaining the situation too.
