I love my E38, but I'm getting tired of the "fifteen year old BMW ownership experience" lol. That and I'm trying to save money to buy a home so I need to cut anything that is expensive from my budget. I dunno if I really want to part with her, but I figured I'd see what the community thinks I could get. I'm a realist so I know I can't charge what I think she's worth but curious if it's enough to even make it worthwhile. Her specs:
2000 740i short wheelbase
Sport package equipped
222k miles
Dinan engine software
35% window tint
Smoked corners/sidemarkers
Blackout grill
6K HID headlight bulbs / 6K foglight conversion
2001 style OEM tails
Lip spoiler
USB port in dash (wired to trunk for a MediaBridge or the like)
Upgraded to 16:9 LCD
Angel eyes (not yet installed, but comes with car)
E39 shift knob
Muffler delete
No pixel problems anywhere, yay!
The service history is well documented back through 2010 when I bought it. Now for the negative stuff:
She's a daily driver; i.e. scratches and dings abound and some scuffing on the wheels
Driver rear window regulator gone, passenger is on its way out
Cup holder is not reliable, falls apart (not really a shocker on an E38 though haha)
Fog lights aren't installed. The assemblies are there, but the bulbs aren't in because I can't figure out the conversion kit wiring
Aux fan was shorting out and draining battery so it's disconnected right now which means no A/C if you are at a standstill
I had $50 tails at first and the cheap bastards leaked and it kinda fried the MkIV. Kinda because it works to drive the menu, but you can't go into either GPS or settings w/o locking the computer up
Passenger rear tire has a slow leak
There is a dinging sound when shifting gears sometimes. I was at a BMW meet a week ago and they said it is a center bearing by the driveshaft that needs replaced
She has issues, but runs great. I just drove her 800 miles to visit family and she performed very well. All electrical stuff like heated seats, cruise, etc work fine. Car was coded so the windows can auto-up via remote and comes with two master remote keys - though the remote in one of them doesn't work. I thought about hacking it apart and replacing the battery, but I just didn't care enough after I bought the new master key.
Parts that have been replaced, in order of most recent:
Water valve
Motor mounts
4 new rotors
Rear upper control arms
Sway bar links
Valley pan
Power steering hoses
Secondary air pump
Expansion tank
Upper/lower oil pan gaskets
Transmission
Water pump
MAF
Center link
Alternator
So, do you think $2000 is obtainable or am I being too optimistic?
