View Full Version : Bear with me, this is gonna sound crazy

So im sitting here at work and I have this crazy idea (or at least my co worker feels like it is)...
The SMG trans while it gets a bad rap as we all know, it is nearly identical to its 6MT counterparts, I love the sequential shift pattern and this may not be true for other but I'd prefer a up/down sequential pattern of the Smg over the standard H pattern anyday. However one of my favorite things to do in these cars is go drifting and while it's not impossible to drift an SMG, the lack of a clutch pedal really limits the maneuvers able to be pulled off. thinking that most drift cars have a hydraulic e brake which is also a up/down type motion I feel it would be way more ergonomical for a drift driver, and while I cant speak from experience I feel it might benefit some drivers using their car for track days. SO... Here is my question.
- Is it possible to rig up a standard E46 M 6MT pedal to an SMG & bypass all clutch engagment systems associated with the SMG while still maintaining the SMG's sequential shift pattern.
*I know this is not the land of the drifter so I get this will NOT be everyone's flavor but please im just brainstorming here and trying to make use of a transmission which most people write off, so dont tell me just buy a 6MT im clearly reaching here so be gentle.

yes
Any further explanation? I guess my other question could be HOW to do so. :help

I've thought of this before, and it depends on the SMG programming.
You can use a girling style master cylinder INLINE between the SMG hydraulic actuator and the slave cylinder, but you need to leave the SMG to handling the clutch for the gearchanges.
The foot clutch would really be necessary for handbrake use and spinouts, and I wonder if the system might freak out when it sees the engine freerev during clutchkicks.

See my idea is basically make the car run like a 6mt, 6MT steering wheel (no paddles), Clutch pedal/6MT brake pedal, but my only thing i cant quite get is the gear change. The whole point is to retain the SMG shift pattern for a "sequential" gear pattern. It all seems a little crazy and unnecesary but it doesnt mean it couldnt work and be awesome. I think a lot of it would have to do with coding and tricking the other 99% of the car its a manual while making the shifter think its an SMG. UGHHHHHH maybe someone with some coding knowledge on the SMG could chime in

If you could figure out a way to bypass the clutch pedal with some sort of in line like you were talking about, and make the useless automatic function work that would super cool. flip a switch and you can have a track monster able to clutch kick and all that jazz and still have an auto.
TOO much bmw for one brain. Someone who knows what they're talking about please chime in. (not that you dont Sean, :D)

If you're going to take all this time and the SMG tranny is good why wouldn't you sell it and just get a proper sequential transmission?

- The SMG is the ugly duckling, the reject, no one wants it so this would be a way to use the SMG for a manual alternative while most swaps get rid of the SMG and replace it with a whole new tranny, this would be a way to utilize the SMG & add a clutch.
- Real sequentials cost a left and right testi.
- Just like you said the SMG isn't bad at all, I just want to incorporate a clutch and get rid of the paddles. make the car think its a manual and make the tranny think its still SMG

SMG is essentially the same gearbox. It can be converted to manual and many do rather than actually getting a whole new transmission. A good rebuilt SMG transmission with the pump is going to be 3-4k easy plus all the other stuff you need to do to make it work if you can even make it work. Just seems like a lot of money and a lot of electronics that could go wrong for something that isn't a huge difference. They have sequential transmissions you can get for reasonable money if power is going to stay relatively low (5-7k).
